How should I relax?
420 can only go so far, drugs have proven to be a double edged sword, and drinking just messes things up.

Meditation is almost impossible for ADHD boy here, and even the "relaxing" teas like Kava do no good.

Any ideas? Anyone know a fool proof way for an ADHD boy to meditate?

1. Not to turn this into a sex thread, but... masturbation.
Works every time.

4. Gives me about 5 minutes of post-climax relaxation
Then the brain goes back to thrashing like a hard drive in a disk array

3. Find out if your local PBS station airs reuns of The Joy of Painting
Tivo or tape them, then pop that sucker in whenever you want to relax.

5. You've listed all the good ones.
How about running? Or at least very fast walking. Break some sweat.

Lift weights.

Yoga?

But I agree, it's very hard to keep pace with how stressful things are getting. The old tricks don't work so well.

Don't give up on meditation though. Everyone feels hyperactive the first few times they attempt to meditate. It's because you are looking at your mind and how fast it works. It's overwhelming, especially for someone with ADHD, I'm sure.

Good luck. You are NOT alone.

8. Are you taking anything for the ADHD? That could be your problem right there.
I know, for me, my brain never shuts off, so relaxation is almost impossible and sleep is hard to come by.

10. Yes I am. Effexor and Welbutrin.
It helps me live and work, but that may be the problem

No matter how many counter-drugs I take, it never turns the brain "off"

11. Try Tai Chi.
Seriously. I know you'll say you won't be able to focus, but you'll be working your mind and body at the same time, so the ADHD will actually work in your favor on this one.

13. is it important to relax?
Edited on Thu May-28-09 05:45 PM by pitohui
for the folks who think sex/masturbation is relaxing, god bless 'em, but they're not doing it right

same for sitting int he garden listening to the birdies sing, i get off my ass, ID that birdie, learn all its songs and try to photograph all its activities and puts it species on my bird list, relax? fuck, relaxing is for weinies, birdwatching is a blood sport (there's a famous essay by that name you may enjoy, birdwatching as a blood sport, i should find it for you)

anyway i think relaxation is pretty over-rated, the mellow of the world are not the people the world remembers

i've been tense and nervous my whole life, never psycho-killed anyone yet

i say don't worry about not being mellow/relaxed enough for somebody else's standards, it's their problem not yours, and this square peg is not interested in fitting into their round hole

who is telling you that it's important to relax? what are they getting out of it? who profits?

22. Birding is totally a blood sport
Most birders hate each other.

I've seen it ruin lives.

People have died from it.

Good times. :D

18. Go to the gym and work out.
Run on the treadmill or ride a stationary bike or those elliptical machines I can't get the hang of. Pump some iron.

I'm not ADHD but a good exercise session does wonders for me.

Mark.

28. Dr. Andrew Weil............has a 19 Second meditation technique..
Edited on Thu May-28-09 06:43 PM by Stuart G
And it works.

In a moment a link to a book that would explain it completely.......

http://www.amazon.com/Eight-Weeks-Optimum-Health-Advantage/dp/0449000265

This book, Eight Weeks to Optimum Health is available in paperback and is probably at your library for free. The meditation technique can be done by anyone and works. Best of luck..

ALSO..try jigsaw puzzles. I have severe anxiety, and they do help.

29. maybe meditation in the traditional sense is not what you need...
...maybe look into Thom Hartman's books on ADHD. He has a great take on it and understanding what makes you tick could be a good start to how to deal with it. I get pretty wired and the only thing I can do to keep sane is get out, walk, run... window shopping sometimes, bookstore sometimes, engaging other people sometimes helps. Good Luck, for those who haven't spent time as or with aomeone with ADHD, it's difficult to understand...
