We're going to see our friend's baby tomorrow. He's a little sick.
One of my friends has a baby with acid reflux. We're not parents.

What is the most soothing thing we can bring to this baby, besides giving his mom a few minutes to catch her breath? We planned on bringing a few of Patrick Bernard's CD's; they're the most soothing thing I've ever listened to. http://www.patrickbernard.com/menuen.html We're wondering if there's anything else some of the parents here could suggest.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

1. acid reflux?
Just curious. Was the baby born premature?

2. No, we don't believe so
He's just feeling rotten. We're trying to come up with some stuff that would soothe both mommy and baby. ;-)

5. Well

It's just that my lil' precious was born premature and suffered this weird thing where her epiglottis would not close when she swallowed liquids. Eventually, all was made well with antibiotics - except years later, she developed irritable bowel syndrome. A nurse practitioner advised her to start eating plain yogurt to re-introduce her digestive tract to helpful bacteria.

In other words, I wonder if your friend's baby could be helped by small increments of acidophilus - perhaps from good old-fashioned plain yogurt?

3. This:

Hooded baby towel.

May sound weird, but babies love them, and so do their parents.

They get wrapped up, and warmed and comforted.

I have never missed yet with giving them as gifts, regardless of any circumstances the child may be going through.

7. SeattleGirl, I'll check one out on our way over there
I wrote Mom yesterday and asked her if there was anything we could bring. She asked for a watermelon. ;-) She hasn't been able to get to the store, and she's craving watermelon.

I'm looking forward to spending time with the baby. We didn't have any, but we were at a doctor's appointment a few months ago, and this woman put her baby in my arms. (!) I love that new baby smell!

15. my favorite baby gift! Hooded towel and those miniature iced tea spoons for
feeding. If I don't know of a specific thing the new mom needs badly, I opt for these two things.

I still have my daughter's spoon that my mom gave us when she was born. It is actually quite useful in the kitchen for that 'dollop' of whatever that is needed for a recipe.

My sister reports that the plain towels as you show above are getting hard to find. She got one for me to give to our cousin's first grandchild and all she could find were like this:

and $20 each too.

4. zantac
Get that baby on Zantac. My son would not tolerate laying down, and even when you carried him around he was fussing, if not outright screaming. Within four days of starting the Zantac he was better.

6. MGB, he's on Zantac
Again, we're going to find out what's going on with the sweet baby in a few hours. He's just been very, VERY unhappy.

Hopefully, the stuff's taking effect and he'll be feeling a lot better by the time we get there! ;-)

8. My second grand daughter was born with acid reflux (yes she was premature) we/they
had a terrible time finding something she could keep down. Ended up with something (don't remember the name) non soy, non dairy, VERY expensive. She is fine now at 5 years old.

9. For the baby: Classical music CDs
Mozart, Bach, Debussy
Baby Einstein has a few, but I like the plain ol' Classical collections, especially piano.

For the parents, something easily gotten before you go there: several plug-in nightlights.
Can't tell you how much I liked being able to provide soft lighting to my baby's room and around the house at night when I was up with him. Seemed to keep both of us calm.

10. Is he only months old?
If so , if your friends don't have a bouncy chair they should get one. If there is a good store for gently used baby clothes and stuff, they usually have them. Lying down is bad since gravity helps the acid stay down. These seats are like a recliner for an adult, baby can fall asleep, and the slightly springy frame gives a gentle rocking motion when the baby moves, which babies love.

11. Great CD reference!
I followed your link and listened to some samples. Sounds like a great collection! I'm always looking for music to settle my dogs down, especially my pregnant mother dog and the new pups when they arrive. I've had good results with Mozart, especially Mozart at Midnight. I'm not big on classical music, but even I like this one! Might go over well with your friends' baby, too.

13. InvisibleTouch, our favorite is "Atlantis Angelis"
I saw a review of the CD in the newsletter of a local CD retailer almost ten years ago. The guy said it was the most soothing music he'd ever owned. I bought it shortly afterwards.

It's on my iPod. I listen to it while I'm working, when I'm stressed, when I can't sleep. I also have several more of Patrick Bernard's CD's. When I'm not listening to him, I'm listening to Constance Demby's space music, too.

Mozart's great for babies. I'll definitely have to check out "Mozart at Midnight"!

14. With my older son I carried him in a sling all the time.
All of my kids were colicky and the sling worked wonders with the oldest (I made my own, got the patter off of the maya wrap website). Hard to carry twins in a sling though - the bouncy chairs worked better for them or the travel swings.

16. another tip: bring mom something nice in the luxury bath department...
really nice body scrub, body wash , lotions etc. I like to include a little something luxurious for mom in my baby shower gifts, so the goodies are handy when you actually get a few minutes to relax in the tub!!!!
