17. Man, I'd love to have that '56 SWB
I'd prefer it be a Stepside, though. And I'd change the wheels.

Here's the El Camino once more:

15. National Corvette Restoration Society.
They and Bloomington Gold are the two "be all end all" Vette certification orgs (IIRC).

Most folks with a beauty like that at some point take it to them for judging. Just curious.

16. I think he shows it at Corvette-only shows
in the Pacific Northwest.

His insurance will only cover the car if it's locked in his garage or constantly attended if he has it outside. He's been offered over $100k for it.

18. If those numbers match
(I think you said it was an a/c car, and IIRC it's a 427/435) it's worth far more than that.

19. All the numbers match
he bought the car in the 80's and the only thing that wasn't stock was the racing clutch. The only time I've ever gotten to drive it. :)

It's a 427 but not a 427/435. My father said that there are more 435's registered than were actually manufactured...

I'm executor of their estate. If they still own it when he passes away, I'll have to sell it and the 2006 convertible. I'll keep you in mind. :)

27. Okay El Rushbo! (Just kidding!!!)
Edited on Sun May-24-09 10:42 AM by Bennyboy
Actually, when I was out there I kind of hung around the neighborhood. What an nice incredibly cool place. kind of reminds me of Elk Grove before all the bay area idiots moved out there and ruined the town. (Just partially kidding!!!!)

It is kind of like Mayberry right in the middle of suburbia. Love it. Close to downtown. Big box stores a few miles away. Great parks all around there, Gibson Ranch...Housng way, way way below local prices. No gated communities. No dickwads and their neighborhood assn's and rules and all that shit. It is like a time gone by out there. There is a great Drive-in (Granites) in which Bill Clinton once had "The best hamburger of my life". Now it is more of a sandwich shop but their burgers are still awesome and the subs are the best anywhere in the Sacramento area. They even come in old school wrappers, wrappers I haven't seen for about 40 years.

Love that small town. No WalMart, No big chain grocery stores. All Mom and Pops. Cars on jacks (I Freaking love that!!!) houses on huge lots, horses, chickens, farms and ranches everywhere, not to mention the iconic water tower and the Archway!

Add all that to the fact that Rush Limbaugh hates it so, Rio Linda is cool as hell....

30. Yeah, I know the area. My 'rents lived there when I was small, ran a little boarding stable.
And I had a high school boyfriend who lived out there, a couple of blocks from the grocery store.

I grew up off of Florin Road back when it was still like that direction- the only grocery store was an IGA, pretty much all the places to eat were local, you couldn't go three blocks without seeing a farm stand in the summer. Everybody had old cars they'd bought for a song and worked on in their own driveways on the weekends. My Dad had an Impala and later a Camaro and a couple of motorcycles, my best friend's Mom had an old Falcon. Kids played outside until dark. Then Elk Grove got all built up, and all that land in between was suddenly worth something. People got all stuck up about property values and keeping up with the Jones', and as soon as one of those old cars broke down again some nosy neighbor would call the county'd tow it off, lest it reduce the value of the house they weren't selling anyhow, and the smart folks saw the writing on the wall and moved farther out in the south county before civilization and the paper prosperity of skyrocketing housing prices totally caught up with them.

31. Yeah that philosophy did not go over in Rio Linda
Edited on Sun May-24-09 12:38 PM by Bennyboy
I remember Tom Sullivan telling everyone that Rio Linda was the next (name an area built out) and that evryone should buy there 20 years ago. My dad bought a house to take advantage of that, but still nothing happened. The values stayed the same.

Funny but I built most of the area around Florin you are describing. The whole greenhaven/pocket area I worked on, made tons of money on. I remember standing at the Hellinick center and you saw nothing at all around there. Tom Winn, of Winncrest Homes, told me, in five years there will be nothing but rooftops here. And it was about three years.

I grew up in Folsom. Not thrilled about how that turned out either.

35. I think the thing that keeps Rio Linda from going the same way is lack of easy freeway access.
Edited on Sun May-24-09 12:49 PM by LeftyMom
That and the reputation for flooding, which really is only an issue off the creek over by the high school.

But you have to drive through North Natomas to the 5 or Antelope or Del Paso Heights to the 80 to get anywhere. Makes commuting a bit of a bitch. If the right developer ever buys up a shitpile of land and greases the right palms to get that area connected up to I-5 or I-80, or some kind of a little spur connecting the two, that whole area will get built out and gentrified.
