1. Consider the E.R. if you can.
They can determine if it needs stitches. At the very least, clean it very, very well and keep it clean.*

Actually, if you press the two ends of the cut together and the wound gaps, you really could need stitches.*

* I am not a doctor and this unsolicited advice comes out of my own experience. YMMV.

7. thanks.....not necessary
it has stopped bleeding and is quite minor, once you get past all the blood. It is clean and bandaged....go me!

2. I got five stitches
in my palm not too long ago. Healed very quickly.

Take care of it, keep it clean and wrapped at first. But air is the best thing, imo, for healing.

3. I cut a chunk of my left index finger off a couple years ago
Was cutting apples and CHOP! off went a piece of the finger and some nail. I put a bunch of pressure on it and it eventually stopped bleeding, it actually looks fine now. Unless its gushing profusely you probably dont absolutely need stitches.

4. Go to Urgent Care
I doubt you need the ER and it's cheaper. About a year ago I sliced my finger open with gardening shears. Hurt like hell and needed 4 stitches. The injection was the worst part -- and the fact that I nearly fainted during it. But, they took care of me -- gave me orange juice and stitched me up. And they gave me a tetanus shot since mine was 8 years old.

5. Does it hurt?
A few months ago I sliced off the top of my left ring finger with a santuko knife. I took off most the nail bed, my finger looked like a sharpened pencil from the side. I went to the ER but they couldn't stitch it because I was missing the slice off the top. The wrapped it well and gave me a script for hydrocodone. I felt like a baby at the time but it really did hurt badly, especially when I accidentally bumbed my finger into anything. Hell, the first few days even the air hurt my finger. The meds got me through until the tissue scabbed enough to not be so sensitive.

BTW, everything grew back completely normal. Except for a slight ridge at the bottom of my nail bed, you can't even tell.

I thought it was really bad what with the tons of blood and pain, but it has clotted nicely
