2. What have you tried so far?
You're sure the computer has a sound card?

Is the mute on?

Is the volume set to zero?

Could you try uninstalling then reinstalling the sound card?

3. volume is all the way up,
device and applications.
I don't think I could uninstall the sound card, idiot nephew has it set up so he has the password to everything, even though he's completely incompetent when it comes to computers.

He'll talk.

In addition to the other advice, you could try this: control panel->sounds and audio devices->hardware->highlight the DVD player, click on "properties", then click the "properties" tab and make sure the volume is up and "enable digital audio" box is checked. A long shot, but maybe.

on edit: I just saw that sound is apparently working, just not with the DVD. Maybe a defective DVD?

5. On mine, Windows Media Player had no sound for DVDs
but another player loaded with the computer (as it's an Acer, it's Acer Arcade) and that worked. You may find something similar on yours. (PS: Nobody uses my computer but me; probability is that your nephew didn't bollix it up, Microsoft did.)

What you most probably need is a codec; alas I'm not savvy enough to be able to tell you what that is, nor to say which one you need. Here are a slew: http://www.wmplugins.com/ItemList.aspx?typeid=8 You may want to try googling "no sound Windows (insert name of platform here, XP or Vista or whatever) DVD"; you will get a lot of hits, most more or less helpful.

7. Ooh! ooh! i know this one!
Buy a Mac!

In seriousness:

Check the power and signal cables going from the speakers to the computer and power outlets. Make sure they are plugged in correctly.

Check Windows control panel/sounds and ensure system is not muted or volume set to 0.

Try another set of speakers; current set may have gone bust.

8. In addition to the good advices in this thread:

It could be a codec problem.Maybe nephew uninstalled/replaced the one you need.

What software do you use to watch your DVDs ? Maybe reinstalling it would help.

10. What program is playing the DVD?
Oftentimes, the program has its own sound setting. Consider even YouTube which even with the computer's volume all the way up, if YouTube is turned off/muted, you'll hear nothing.

12. I'm 99% sure it's a codec problem.
Download Media player Classic
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Media_Player_Classic.htm
and it should work.
