1. Her albums with Jaco Pastorius were amazing.
Particularly "Shadows and Light." Pat Metheny Lyle Mays, Michael Brecker and Jaco as bassist/musical director. Stupefying. Only a brilliant artist could surround herself with such musical genius and still shine as the brightest star.

2. in between choice 1 and 2....
I loved all the early stuff (choice no. 1) but I loved a lot of choice no. 2: court and spark, hissing of summer lawns, hejira -- then I started not liking the Mingus stuff. Oh and I wanted to like it...... I tried.....

4. IIt's not fashionable to say this, but I love "Court & Spark"
..wheras, I'd venture it's probably Joni's least favorite.

"Mingus" seems to be the jumping off point for a lot of fans. What's sad is that she does some good stuff with Geffen, but a lot of the fans from the 70s had moved on.

3. Hissing of Summer Lawns and Hejira are my faves!
In terms of her later catalog, I also love Dog Eat Dog and Night Ride Home...
Nowadays, for sexy sultry jazzy torch-song-type stuff, she's THE white Billy Holiday!
IMHO...

5. The album where she sang standards in 2000 is definitely good listening
does she have the same voice she had in 1972? No - we all lose our high range, but she has an outstanding jazz voice now that I wish she'd use more.

I read she has some odd skin ailment that prevents her from working right now.
