Apparently, ya don't got one -- so what can I say?

2. Why should you care that some rich guy can throw a lemon-shaped ball to another guy
right before some other rich guy tries to tackle one of them?

Only thing I've ever watched on ESPN was martial arts related stuff. Just because I'm a nerd and I find that interesting. :P

5. I cared because a female horse was going to win.
She kicked some male horse ass.

If it would have been just males running I wouldn't have cared.

It is a female thing.

6. Why should you care about millionaires
Playing hit and catch with a small white ball on a grass field or about expensive automobiles driving around tracks and polluting the environment? See? I hate it when people feel the need to shit all over something they don't like or others do. There are plenty of sports I don't like or understand but I don't go around bitching about them

7. I used to love horse racing before I saw how it takes a terrible
toll on the horses. One little false move for the horse can mean death. Here lately, it seems like it happens often too. Maybe it just gets more press now.

8. I spent a great deal of time around thoroughbreds and along
the backstretch in the late 70s, early 80s. I enjoyed it immensely until a terrible, terrible accident took the lives of several horses in Saratoga in the summer of 1980.

Now I can't watch. It scares me that one of these animals will injure themselves.

11. Me too! It doesn't take much to end a horse's life.
One leg, ankle, or foot injury can mean death.

13. I dunno.
Personally, I'm abhorred at any activity where animals are forced to entertain people. I've never watched a horse race, never will.

But then, I'm a freak.

and how one chooses to live their life.

All sports have been bastardized for the want of money.

17. I grew up two miles from the Garden State Racetrack.
As a little kid, I remember thinking that there were an awful lot of very rich people (judging from their clothes and cars) making more money by making horses do things they shouldn't be doing.

I didn't watch it then, and I never will.

22. Me either
It stresses me out to watch, so I don't.

The animals don't choose to play and baseball players (or any other human-based sport) who injure themselves don't get shot.

25. Like anything else, there are pros and cons to the sport
My family is from the epicenter (Lexington, KY) of horse racing. My mom's cousin was the house attorney for Calumet Farm, and the good, bad and ugly about the farm is written up in "The Wild Ride". Honestly, most of the horses that race in the Triple Crown races have better living conditions than many of us here at DU. Additionally, running is what a thoroughbred loves to do most.

I'm sickened when a horse goes down. When it comes to animals there is no bigger wuss than I am. Yet, I also know that most of these horses get better housing, exercise and health care than most of us two-legged creatures. The horses are happy, they get to run which is what they want to do, and they live in spectacular conditions.

i don't get sailing or people who care about having the fastest, loudest cars possible, but hey, everyone has their own interests.

31. I could write a long treatise
Edited on Sat May-16-09 11:30 PM by northzax
On the history and tradition of the Sport of Kings, and throw in a bit about the human-equine bond and all that. But that won't matter. Instead I'll just point out that it includes three of my favourite things: sundresses, alcohol and gambling. Nuff said.

And I'll point something else out: you cannot force a horse to race. It either will, or it won't.
