Number people will have fun with this on 5/15/09 at 3 pm I went to the 7/11 to buy a soda it was 1.39 afore tax. it was also buy 2 get one free but i only got one. for my change back i got an 1899 5 cent piece ( big V inteada 5 is the mark). It is very poor condition so probably not worth more than 5 cents.

But I got to wondering: who would spend it? Economy must be causing people to get into their coin collections?

edit: we have the odd#'s 1-3-5-7-9-11

1. My dad had a retail establishment for decades
One year when I was about seven or eight, which means about a decade and a half ago, I got two rare finds. Within the span of about one month, my dad brought me home a one dollar bill from Series 1928, and a two dollar bill from series 1932. They were in perfect, crisp condition. It was impossible to identify who had spent them and nobody ever called about getting them back, so I still have them.

3. I got a 1906 Indian penny in change from a convenience store not too long ago
I collect coins, the valuable ones and the not so valuable ones. I always check my pocket change at the end of the day.

6. Revenge?
I've heard about nasty divorces where a spouse has a nice collection and the other spouse will take a favorite coin and spend it.. Nasty but true:(

10. My parents owned a camera and hobby store for over 20 years
My father always checked the coins as they came in. He collected several Indian head pennies and once a 1909 Lincoln head. Unfortunately not the really valuable one. Still, it's nice to have in the collection.

jar filled with change. Didn't bother to check (stupid) and put the coins back in circulation.

/on edit/ The oldest I have is a 1906 Indian Head penny.

12. Oldest coins I've gotten were 1940s pennies.
I've gotten several with wheat ears on the back over the years. I kept a 1944 one for several years, but amidst several moves I've lost track of it.

13. When I worked a register in the early 90s...
I snagged two buffalo nickels and one Mercury-head dime. Not sure of the years, but I still have them in a box upstairs with the rest of my "weird" money. Silver certificates and the like.

14. My oldest coin is a 1912 penny.
Still in fairly good shape. I also have a 1920 buffalo nickel I found in circulation when I was working as a cashier (and I was almost stupid enough to point it out to the customer :hide:), as well as a 19something Mercury had dime.

I like old coins, but I rarely find them anymore because I don't handle a lot of cash these days.

16. Either kids raiding a parent's "special money" jar for candy money,

an elderly person who's forgotten what they were keeping in the "special money" jar,

or the money was stolen by someone thought they were taking "regular" money.

I used to work in law enforcement. You'd be surprised how common the latter is.
