Saw something really disturbing today.

I parked next to a car that had been keyed. That was mildly disturbing. What was really disturbing was that the car's hood had a very large swastika keyed into it.

I grew up in an area where swastikas were often spray painted on things with other graffiti. Considering where I live that's pretty sad. And I'm pretty sure most of the time of was done by teenagers who didn't really understand what it meant-outside of it being an act of rebellion. I don't know what's worse-the casual unthinking use or the deliberate hatefulness( there was a swastika found painted in a parking lot of a synogauge near my house around Passover). It's so disturbing that this horrible symbol is still so casually thrown around

Without understanding the significance of the symbol, it's a kind of neat design that kids like to copy. As they become more aware of what the nazis actually did to people, the fascination wears off...even for mildly delinquent types who get their thrills from keying peoples' cars.

17. Kind of what I was going to say. I used to draw and carve swastikas all the time as a kid.

I thought they were cool, and the only knowledge I had of Hitler came from John Wayne WWII movies. Kids, even teenagers, don't always know what it really means. So there's no telling what was going on there.

This is just a guess but I'd bet that the vast majority of graffiti swastikas are caused by young kids who've no idea what they're carving, they just know it's naughty.

Same with the anarchy symbols. And to a certain extent Che Quevara paraphenalia.
