Yes, back then there was a West and East Germany

Do you remember West Germany? Communist Czechoslovakia?

Prague Spring?

All of that Cold War shit we had to deal with - people who didn't want to live like slaves, and slaves who didn't want to get shot.

Wow - I don't want to go back to that ever

Do you?

1. I was 22 and living in the UK when the Soviet Union ceased to exist
I grew up during the tail end of the cold war, and it sucked. It's funny because I know of a lot of young adults who don't remember the Soviet Union and Gorbachev. It's hard to explain to them that we once lived with the very real fear that the world could end in a couple of hours.

I'll take a planeful of Al Qaeda nutjobs over the Cold War any day.

Agreed - 100%

Every time we heard a plane fly overhead we thought "Oh shit this is it!"

4. Good God, I wasn't the only one who thought that!
As a kid, every time I heard a jet go by overhead, I looked up and tried to see if it was a MiG. I hated that feeling!

I bet that Bowie show is pretty cool, though. I'm officially jealous!

3. Was this the period when he and Iggy moved to Berlin to get away from the heroin scene....
only to find out that Berlin was the heroin capital of Europe?

"There went 3 years" was Bowie's quote (or something like that)

5. HAHAHAHA Yes Iggy was trying to get away from Heroin, but Bowie was trying to get away from Coke
Then, the DOC of LA in the 70's

Iggy somehow got clean, Bowie got cleanish and produced His and Iggy's albums (yeah, you do that without coke...)
