What's the most you have spent on a watch?
Edited on Mon May-11-09 07:41 PM by Mike 03
The "Rolex" thread provoked me to ask this question, but there was recently another thread about how much you had spent on the most expensive pair of shoes you've owned, which I found fascinating.

If you feel like sharing:

What is the most you have spent on a wristwatch, and was it worth it?

EDIT: I guess I will go first. It was $1,200 and it was a huge mistake. I'm so embarrassed by the watch that I almost never wear it.

Perfect for Michael Jordan or Magic Johnson. Not for a smaller person. It's a clock, not a watch. My dad suggested I remove the band and nail it to the wall.

2. $200 or so.
It's a Tag Heuer that I bought on clearance probably 15 years ago. Still runs like a charm and tough as hell. I also have an Omega Seamaster Cosmic 2000 from the 1960s that I bought on ebay for $105.

Granted, I have bought watches that were worth more than that... I just happened to see them on sale or clearance and snagged 'em then. :)

A Tag Heuer that I still wear- I've had it for about 10 years.

On edit... Yeah, I guess it was worth it- it's lasted me quite a few years (several band changes, though).

This is the closest pic I can find, but it's not exactly right...

I just use my phone, but he went through a phase where he was kind of obsessed with clocks and calendars, so I figured that would be a nice present.

...at the same post-grad brunch where I presented my husband with this gift, my in-laws also presented him with a gift.

A $7000 Rolex.

17. Never more than $20.
Watches get lost. They can also get wet, and the water-proof ones can get stepped on. When you have to wash your hands over fifty times a day (no, I don't have OCD - I'm a nurse) you spring for the cheapest water-proof one you can find.

22. About $20 and when the battery ran out, I was too cheap to replace it
Since the watch sat on my dresser for ten years before I noticed the battery was bad.

I once got a survey call from some watch company that was trying to determine what style watches women wanted. I told the nice lady I was the wrong person for the survey - I don't regularly wear a watch and my style choice each day is whether I should wear a T-shirt with a pocket or one without. :eyes:

She didn't care and we had a good time going through the questions. Watch brands I could think of - Casio and Timex. Clothing brands - Hanes and Levis. And so forth.

I think I was the least fashion conscious person she had ever spoken to!

I've had three watches, ever. All three were cheap. All three were bought for me. And I wore them all until they broke, then purposely and pointedly did not buy another one. I hated being the guy with the watch. ("What time is it?" "I dunno. Ask Don." Yuck.)

26. I suppose, technically, the $200 for my cell phone
Before that, the most expensive watch was a Fossil - I think I paid $75 or thereabouts. That was one of the first truly "nice" things I ever bought myself, since it was the first time I had an actual, real, paying job. I was in my 30s. And it felt wonderful!

Haven't worn it years because... well, because of cell phones.

A friend and I were at a store a few months ago, and she asked me, "Do you have the time?" and I said, "No, I don't have my cell phone." She said, "Neither do I." So we walked around a bit more, and came across another shopper guy. She asked him if he knew the time, and he said, "No, I don't have my cell phone."

I bought it when I turned 40. It is for getting dressed up. I wear a cheapo calendar watch to the office. I have a glow in the dark Lorus with a velcro strap that I got for $14 for knocking around. I have a stainless Swatch I bought in Vegas for $75 for casual events.

I don't recall every watch I've ever had, but probably the most expensive watch I had was the OLD original Texas Instruments TI-500

http://www.datamath.org/TI_Stuff/TI-500.htm

It was simply a "must have" item for geeks of the day. You could probably get something 10 times better at the dollar store today, but I wouldn't be surprised if that one was $150 originally, in like early 80s dollars, too. I'm sure I conned my dad into getting it for my birthday or something.

I used to wear my grandfather's Omega which he received when he retired, which was probably expensive. I should dig that out and see if it still runs...

Now I have a Casio that has about 28 functions on it, including the little "Atomic Clock" syncronization feature. Felt like I was being extravagant spending $40 on it.
