do your pets have any special way they like to be petted?
every pet loves to be scratched on their head and under their chin, do yours have any particularly favored areas they like petted?

Esther will lift her butt up in the air and will purr like a motorboat when you scratch her back right around her tail. In fact that's how she "picked me" at the shelter. I started petting her and she immediately lifted her butt up. The volunteers told me she loves getting scratched around her tail, so that's how she chose me, and the rest is history.

7. haha, that spot must put them in a state of bliss
Esther's a pretty, um, thick cat, but not around her tail, so there must be a lot of nerves there.

15. My little female cat loves getting her but petted. I think all female cats like it.
My big male likes it when i pet him on his nose and between his eyes, around his neck ....if he wants to be petted at all. If he doesn't want to be touched I let him be cause he will attack. But last night I couldn't resist and kept try to pet him while he would attack me with all four feet and bite. He is such a mamma's boy most of the time.

2. My big guy loves him some belly rubs.
He's 18.5 lbs and mostly belly and there is a SUBSTANTIAL amount of that to be petted! He also purrs if you simply look at him. Cuddle-cat.

3. My dog loves to be scratched on the chest. If you don't hit that spot,
she will use her paw to pull your hand to the correct spot.

6. More of a routine.
I hold her with her front paws on my shoulder. Carry her around showing her the pictures on the wall and describing them while sritching the back of her neck. She purrs so loud.

9. Oh, yeah. They are all different--different approaches, different regions...
Between five cats and two dogs (in two different households), each is different. My kitten Riddle you have to approach slowly, let her lick your fingers, then pet her on the side of the head and neck, or she will bolt. Once she's comfortable, she falls over trying to pet herself on your hand. My oldest cat, Kiki (about 16 now), will stalk you, but when you go to pet her, she will duck away, then raise her head into your hand and rake it with the side of her teeth. If you try to walk away, she will grab your hand with her paw and pull it back.

The dogs want to lick as much as they want to be petted. For them, it's vigorous scratching behind the ears and neck.

Some of them react differently to different people. I seem to be Alpha Pet, so they all come to me and stay as long as I'll let them. Some prefer one of my kids over the other. None of the kitties like my ex-wife much, even the ones who live with her. :) Good kitties. She's a dog person. She likes to grab against their wills. Kitties no likey that.

12. Tristan stands between your knees
(head first) when he wants you to scritch his butt. He will also roll on his back when it's time for a belly rub.

Edited on Mon May-11-09 06:09 PM by Rob H.
my cat will jump up on my chest and lay with the top of her head resting against my chin so I can pet her back and sides. She does the elevator butt thing, too.

16. The cats like to be petted from head, all the way down to the tips
of their tails.

Toby loves belly rubs. He'd probably lay on his back, belly-up, for HOURS if you'd just keep rubbing his belly. He also loves having his ears rubbed and petted.

:)

17. Carefully
The meanest cat in the world will tolerate head and neck scratching for approximately 30 seconds. Then, I must quit or I will end up bloody.
