1. One part sugar to four parts water.
That's it!

Don't use honey.

3. Emphasis on "DO NOT USE HONEY!"
See post 1 for recipe - that's the one I've used. DO NOT USE HONEY!

9. Yeah, it does mix better if you heat it.
It doesn't really have to boil - you can just warm the water in the microwave and then mix in the sugar.

13. There are three things I look for when buying ornamental plants:
1) native variety
2) attracts butterflies
3) attracts hummingbirds

Sometimes it says "attracts bees", but if either 2 or 3 are involved, there are always bees.

16. well... mine involves cold fusion!
Edited on Mon May-11-09 11:53 AM by Bertha Venation
Because we're in-FUS-ing the sugar and water, and it CAN be done in cold water, so that's cold fusion! Which is so confusing that my method must be superior.

:7

I am trying to cover my embarrassment that I forgot to mention using hot water to dissolve the sugar.

8. I was speaking with a bee keeper about this. Pure honey
is practically spoil proof, but once it is diluted, it loses the antibacterial properties! Diluted honey ferments readily and will either give the birds a buzz or poison them!

7. It's much cheaper to buy plain granulated sugar and add water.
The red color isn't needed and can be harmful to the little birds.

19. Commercial food also has preservatives which you don't really need
However, as was previously posted, you need to clean and refill the feeder on a weekly basis because of this.

6. Remember to keep the feeder clean and change the sugar water often.
Old sugar water can make the hummingbirds sick.

24. We had these tall, red flowers in our front yard
that a hummingbird seemed to enjoy. I would see it around 6-7 in the evening last summer. I want to plant the same flowers again so the hummingbird comes back.
