1. "Tamalpais High" and anything else on that David Crosby album....
Edited on Sun May-10-09 09:02 PM by NYC_SKP
I think all of "If Only I Could Remember My Name" had at least indirect references to drugs (including the title).

1. "Music Is Love" (Crosby/Nash/Young) – 3:16
2. "Cowboy Movie" (Crosby) – 8:02
3. "Tamalpais High (At About 3)" (Crosby) – 3:29
4. "Laughing" (Crosby) – 5:20
5. "What Are Their Names" (Crosby/Garcia/Lesh/Shrieve/Young) – 4:09
6. "Traction in the Rain" (Crosby) – 3:40
7. "Song With No Words (Tree With No Leaves)" (Crosby) – 5:53
8. "Orleans" (traditional) – 1:56
9. "I'd Swear There Was Somebody Here" (Crosby) – 1:19

EDITED to add cover art:

14. That's probably the most THC-laced album in rock & roll history.
The 2-disc reissue (1 CD, 1 Audio-only DVD in Dolby Surround Sound) was pretty amazing. It's also a "who's who" of the musicians who mattered at the time of its making: Neil Young, Graham Nash, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart, Jerry Garcia, David Freiberg, Paul Kantner, Grace Slick, Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady, Gregg Rolie, Michael Shrieve, Joni Mitchell...

Garcia's pedal steel work on "Laughing" is worth the price of admission all by itself. The bonus track on the reissue..."Kids And Dogs"...really sounds like an outtake and probably could have stayed on the cutting-room floor.

5. Snowblind - Black Sabbath
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w93Z1M2r7SA&feature=PlayList&p=C06C8E98C142F0E9&index=1

What you get and what you see
Things that dont come easily
Feeling happy in my vein
Icicles within my brain

Something blowing in my head
Winters ice, it soon will spread
Death would freeze my very soul
Makes me happy, makes me cold

My eyes are blind but I can see
The snowflakes glisten on the tree
The sun no longer sets me free
I feel theres no place freezing me

Let the winter sun shine on
Let me feel the frost of dawn
Fill my dreams with flakes of snow
Soon Ill feel the chilling glow

Dont you think I know what Im doing
Dont tell me that its doing me wrong
Youre the one whos really a loser
This is where I feel I belong

Crystal world with winter flowers
Turns my day to frozen hours
Lying snowblind in the sun
Will my ice age ever come?

37. Sweet Leaf - Black Sabbath
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdD1yrOCwnY

Alright now!
Won't you listen?

When I first met you, you didn't realize
I can't forget you or your surprise
You introduced me to my mind
And left me wanting, you and your kind

I love you, Oh you know it

My life was empty, forever on a down
Until you took me, showed me around
My life is free now, my life is clear
I love you sweet leaf, though you can't hear

Come on now, try it out

Straight people don't know, what you're about
They put you down and shut you out
You gave to me a new belief
And soon the world will love you sweet leaf

56. Slow Death, The Flamin Groovies
Edited on Mon May-11-09 12:09 PM by BurtWorm
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x83w7b_flamin-groovies-slow-death_music

I called the Doctor
Up in the morning
I had a fever
It was a warning

She said there's nothing I can prescribe
To keep your raunchie bag of bones alive
I got some money
Give me one more shot
She said go kill yourself
I said Thanks a lot.

Its a slow death, slow death, slow death, slow death

I called the preacher
oh holy holy
I begged forgiveness
and then he told me

There's nothing I can prescribe
To keep your raunchie bag of bones alive
I got some money
Give me one more shot
He said go kill yourself
I said Thanks a lot.

I've got to mainline
A hit of morphine
Except the mainline
Is like a bad dream

Slow death eats my mind away
Slow death turns my flesh to clay
slow death, slow death, slow death, slow death

16. Angel Dust - Venom
Living
Running,
Out on the streets at night,
Searching,
Hoping,
For the right connection, coz',
Need it, want it,
You know I've got to have it,
Takes me higher than anything I know.

Angel Dust,
Need a shot to see me through the day,
Angel Dust,
Want a lot I've got to get away.

I live my life,
Like there's no tomorrow,
Take no
chances
I'm drowning all my sorrows coz' I,
Need it, want it,
You know I've got to have it,
Takes me higher than anything I know.

Chorus

Laughing,
Crying,
Every night and day,
I know,
You know,
That I'm a different man because I,
Need it, want it,
You know I've got to have it,
Takes me higher than anything I know.

Chorus

I always associated with bong water smoke....probably wrong, always thought "blinded by the light" was about cocaine use.....

But a real drug reference song is "Toy Soldiers" by Martika...it's about drug abuse.

Though many have asserted this to be a drug song, it has always been denied by its authors.

Sometimes a dragon named "Puff" and a boy with the last name "Paper" are just a dragon named "Puff" and a boy with the last name "Paper".

39. I Got You

by The Stone Temple Pilots

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oh8YZF2KlzM

"I Got You"

I got you
But it's the craving for the good life
That sees me through trouble times
When my mind begins to wander to the spoon

And I got you
Because you're there to bend and nurture me through these
Troubled times
'Cause the fix begins to twist my troubled mind

And I got you to paint the sorry on my day
And I got you to paint the roses on my grave
And I got you

I got you
But it's the feeling that I get when you're away
Twist my mind 'cause when I'm alone and cold, I fell like dyin'
And I got you to fill the craving that I get inside my mind
When you're there to fill the space I have inside, I feel like cryin'

And I got you to paint the sorrow on my day
And I got you to paint the roses on my grave
And I got you

All the slippin' that I slap me
I got you, I got you
All the slippin' that I slap me

40. "Cocaine Habit Blues/Take a Whiff On Me" - Traditional
Oh cocaine habit mighty bad
It's the worst old habit I ever had
Hey, hey, honey take a whiff on me

I went to Mr Beaman's in a lope
Saw a sign on the window said no more dope
Hey, hey, honey take a whiff on me

Since cocaine went out of style
You can catch them shooting needles all the while
Hey, hey, honey take a whiff on me

If you don't think coke is mighty good
Ask Alma Rose at Minglewood (note 1)
Hey, hey, honey take a whiff on me

I love my whiskey, I love my gin
But the way I love my coke is a doggone sin
Hey, hey, honey take a whiff on me

I strut my stuff long as you please (note 2)
But it takes a little coke to give me ease
Hey, hey, honey take a whiff on me

Notes
(1) on the Mother McCree's recording, it sound as if Jerry sings "Just have a rose in Minglewood", which makes less sense than "Ask Alma Rose ..." which is what the Memphis Jug Band sing.
(2) Jerry mumbles this line on the Mother McCree's version, possibly because he gets the two lines of the verse in the wrong order, at least compared to the Memphis Jug Band version.

Grateful Dead and Related Recordings
Date Album
Jul 1964 Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions

Origins
Thanks to Anita Cantor for the transcription of the Memphis Jug Band's 1930 recording:

Cocaine habit's mighty bad
It's the worst old habit that I ever had
(Hey, hey, baby (honey) take a wiff on me)

I went to Mr. Lehman's in a lope
Saw a sign on the window
Says 'No More Dope'
(Hey, hey, honey take a wiff on me)

If ya don't believe cocaine is good
Ask Alma Rose down in Minglewood
(Hey, hey, baby (honey) take a wiff on me)

I love my whiskey an I love my gin
But the way I love my coke is a doggone sin
(Hey, hey, honey take a whiff on me)

Since cocaine went out of style
You can catch 'em shootin' needles all the while
(Hey, hey, honey take a whiff on me)

Well, it takes a little coke to give me ease
Strut yo' stuff long as you please
(Hey, hey, honey take a whiff on me)

'Let's all take a wiff on that account'

(And let's, S-H-A HAY-AY, HA-AY-ARE)

Ramones....

'Sugarlight'...X ..I can't find a video or a mp3

Sugarlight, we're addicts
Why do you think we came
He's pasting gold leaches
(On my arm)
We sharpen up our teeth
White sugar
He speaks French
Memorizing torsos
He's open throated
In the corner
Hands arrive at hands
My arm is tied off waiting
To burn it down
(Sugarlight, sugarlight)
(I can't believe)
Swallowing one bulb after another
In the (city of electric light)
(Sugarlight, sugarlight)
(I can't believe)
Swallowing one bulb after another
In the (city of electric light)...

58. MGMT, Time to Pretend
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVnRzEjpUmE

I'm feeling rough, I'm feeling raw, I'm in the prime of my life.
Let's make some music, make some money, find some models for wives.
I'll move to Paris, shoot some heroin, and fuck with the stars.
You man the island and the cocaine and the elegant cars.

This is our decision, to live fast and die young.
We've got the vision, now let's have some fun.
Yeah, it's overwhelming, but what else can we do.
Get jobs in offices, and wake up for the morning commute.

Forget about our mothers and our friends
We're fated to pretend
To pretend
We're fated to pretend
To pretend

I'll miss the playgrounds and the animals and digging up worms
I'll miss the comfort of my mother and the weight of the world
I'll miss my sister, miss my father, miss my dog and my home
Yeah, I'll miss the boredom and the freedom and the time spent alone.

There's really nothing, nothing we can do
Love must be forgotten, life can always start up anew.
The models will have children, we'll get a divorce
We'll find some more models, everything must run it's course.

We'll choke on our vomit and that will be the end
We were fated to pretend
To pretend
We're fated to pretend
To pretend

Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah

64. Salin Shoes by Little Feat
Lady in a turban, cocaine tree
Does a dance so rhythmically
She's cryin', and a singin' and having a time
and gee that cocaine tree look fine

You've got to put on your sailin shoes
Put on your sailing shoes
Everyone will start to cheer
When you put on your sailin' shoes

Jedidiah, he's got a dime
Says he catch a more fish, every time
Well I've got a line, and you've got a pole
And I'll meet you at the fishin' hole

You've got to put on your sailin shoes
Put on your sailing shoes
Everyone will start to cheer
When you put on your sailin' shoes

Doctor, doctor, I feel so bad
This is the worst day, I ever had
Have you this misery a very long time?
Well if you if, I'll lay it on the line

You've got to put on your sailin shoes
Put on your sailing shoes
Everyone will start to cheer
When you put on your sailin' shoes

73. Peruvian Cocaine: Immortal Technique

Lyrics to Peruvian Cocaine :

I've heard whispers about the financial support
your government receives from the drug industry.

Well, the irony of this, of course, is that
this money, which is in the billions, is coming from
your country. You see, you are the major purchaser of
our national product, which is of course cocaine.

On one hand, you're saying the United States
government is spending millions of dollars to
eliminate the flow of drugs onto our streets. At the
same time, we are doing business with the very same
goverment that is flooding our streets with cocaine.

Mmm-hmm, si, si. Let me show you a few other
characters that are involved in this tragic comedy.

I'm on the border of Bolivia, working for pennies
Treated like a slave, the coke fields have to be ready
The spirit of my people is starving, broken and sweaty
Dreaming about revolution (REVOLUTION!) looking at my machete
But the workload is too heavy to rise up in arms
And if I ran away, I know they'd probably murder my moms
So I pray to "Heso Preisto" when I go to the mission
Process the cocaine, paced and play my position

Ok, listen while I'm out there, just give me my product
Before we chop off ya hands for worker's misconduct
I got the power to shoot a copper, and not get charged
And it would be sad to see your family in front of a firing squad
So to feed your kids, I need these bricks
40 tons in total, let me test it, indeed I
Shit, this is good, pass me a tissue
And don't worry about them, I paid off the officials

Yo, it don't come as a challenge, I'm the son of some of the foulest
Elected by my people...the only one on the ballot
Born and bred to consult with feds, I laugh at fate
And assassinate my predecessor to have his place
In a third-world fashion state, lock the nation
With 90% of the wealth in 10% of the population
The Central Intelligence Agency takes weight faithfully
The finest type of China white and cocaine you'll see

Honey I'm home, nevermind why our bank account's suddenly grown
It's funny, we're so out of this debt from this money we owe
Woulda ya...mind if I told you I had two governments overthrown
To keep our son enrolled in a private school, and to keep ya tummy swollen
C'mon, our fuckin' home was built on the foundation of bloody throats
The hungry stolen of they souls, of course this country's runnin' coke
I took a stunted oath to hush the one's who know
But CIA conducts the flow of these young hustlers who lust for dough

I don't work in the hood (Hit my connect)
Plus what's really good, they supply for the hood
These dudes fucking crack me up, scrutinize like we inferior
Petrified when we meet in my area (calm down)
My dude's'll shoot until I say so, got the loot?
Give me the YAY YAY like Ice Cube, so don't play with my llello
We won't stop for you bastards
Must choose (?), chop it and bag it

Taking pictures and tapping phones
Debating snitches and cracking codes
Past a couple, blast the fo',
Want any hustler stacking dough with probably crack the blow
And my overtime is where your taxes go
I gain your trust
Get you to hand weight to us because we paid up front
On the low with cameras taping ya
Getting pop away? The prison sentence is going to
Make the officer leave with two ki's out the evidence room

Out the evidence room
Went my fame, truck, boat or plane, they watching you
You think you got work? They copping too
We control blocks, they lock countries
Ya own companies, we had nice cars and sneaker money
Now there's players out there, talking 'bout the holding
With bugs in they house like they down South with windows open
Your dough ain't long, you wrong, you take shorts and (?)
Feds will be up in your mouth...like forks and spoons
So enjoy the rush, live plush off Coke bread
Soon you'll be in a cell with me, like Jenny Lopez
In school, I was a bully, now life is fully a joke
I keep a flow on a boat for Peruvian Coke
Players do favors for governers and tax makers
Fat Quakers smoke crack and sex acts with bad mayors
The walls got ears, you big mouths probably scared
Not prepared to do years like Javier

The story just told is an example of the path that
drugs take on their way to every neighborhood, in
every state of this country. It's a lot deeper than
the niggas on your block. So when they point the
finger at you, brother men, this is what you've got to tell them:

I'm not guilty. YOU'RE the one that's guilty. The
lawmakers, the politicians, the Columbian drug lords,
all you who lobby against making drugs legal. Just
like you did with alcohol during the prohibition.
You're the one who's guilty. I mean, c'mon, let's kick
the ballistics here: Ain't no Uzi's made in Harlem.
Not one of us in here owns a poppy field. This thing
is bigger than (Immortal Technique). This is big
business. This is the American way.
