How does one reform republican thinking?
This is a serious questions: A professor at a local college who is a good friend of mine tends to watch Fox news and has been stating his fear that a more socialistic system, such as single payer health care, could lead to fascism. He's an awesome person and is actually quite intelligent. I just think he's being fed bad info from faux noise. I need some helpful suggestions on how to bring him around...short of dropping Fox news...I don't think his wife will give up that bad habit.

Thanks!

1. How could an intelligent person not know the difference
between socialism and fascism? Seriously.

2. This is pretty heady stuff for the lounge. You may want to post it in GD
Unless you want people to tell you about kittens, Olive Garden, cornflake-encrusted fried chicken or getting on Midlo's DTM list.

9. You could explain that many civilized (ie: most!) countries in the world
have successful "socialist" programs, such as health care, while none of them have succumbed to Fascism.

You could also explain that Fascism is at direct odds with Socialism.

Or that as humans are a social animal, a strong and stable society in which people do not have to worry about health care if they lose their jobs enable them to continue living (and spending) without resorting to desperate measures.

I'm not sure there is a cure; I know I've tried many times with friends and acquaintances. It can be done, but there's a lot of pain involved because the person needs to shut off the noise machine and start thinking.
