Ever been to a Star Trek convention?
I have, and I had a blast.

I've also been to comic conventions, fantasy conventions, etc. Had a great time nearly every time.

1. Went to a sci-fi convention in New Orleans once
Edited on Fri May-08-09 10:23 AM by SoxFan
It was actually a lot of fun. Got to meet David Prowse (the big dude inside the Darth Vader suit) and Terry Farrell (Jadzia Dax from Deep Space 9)

8. The insider person I enjoyed meeting the most
wasn't an actor, but a producer.

I was unlucky enough to mostly meet tired, cranky performers. Other than one guy, whose name I forget. But he was lovely. :)

2. Yep. They are a lot of fun
And most people are not "super geeks" dresseed in costume and speaking Klingonese either.
Some of the guests they book are SO entertaining, some of the best speakers I've ever heard (Johnathan Frakes, Robert Picardo, the guy who was "Marcus" on B5 are some that come to mind)

5. I like the super geeks though.
They're a spirited bunch. :)

I enjoy the costume contests, too. Can't have those without the super geeks.

And yeah... the Q&A sessions are usually good for a few laughs at least... utter hilarity if you're lucky.

Edited on Fri May-08-09 10:33 AM by Richardo
Got autographs from DeForest Kelley, George Takei and I think James Doohan. And Matt Jefferies, designer of the Enterprise.

Shatner and Nimoy did not appear.

The event was combined with a comic book/animation convention so I got June Foray's autograph too. :bounce:

16. No, but I was at a gem show at a place that was having a con
of some sort.

I was looking at some rings, and when I looked up, there were guys in velvet capes and wizard hats next to me, also looking at the jewelry. Thankfully, I had seen a sign outside the building saying <---Gem Show / Sci-Fi Con--->

I found out that the biggest "furry" convention in the country used to be held at the hall where all the biggest gem show was - now THERE'S one that would have freaked me out.

19. I'm not sure,
but I think most furries are just people who enjoy dressing up. The pervy aspect came later and is resented by those not-pervy.

I don't enjoy dressing up myself but I've spent so much time around people who do (at ren fairs, conventions, rocky horror, etc) that it jsut doesn't faze me at all.

31. Yep. Good fun if you check your judgements at the door.
It's like a ren faire; people are being who they want to be without the interference of "reality" and the outside world. Letting others have their fantasies enables you to have your own and have fun with it.

And of course one of the more famous Trek fans (Bjo Trimble) was prominent in the SCA some years ago, too. Lots of SCA'ers at cons.

And yeah, we're all geeks. So, what of it?

45. The only problem with that...
If you've ever spent an extended length of time at a Ren Faire or the like, you find that this little haven of non-judgmentalism quickly resegregates itself into the same stratifications and cliques that were supposed to be left behind in "reality." Some geeks are more equal than others, it seems.

I'm not condemning anyone, either; society breeds society, so it's only to be expected that a sub-group would reflect the larger group in perfect fractal style.

In fact, I've often referred to our local SCA chapter as "the high school AFTER high school" due to its cliquishness.

54. I didn't want to mention the SCA, but that's the group that first opened my eyes to the phenomenon
I was frankly stunned to see it, and not a little disappointed.

And, although I don't pretend that I'm immune to that same self-stratifying tendency, I've felt a little "outside the group" ever since recognizing that it drives so much of the functioning of the SCA.

I did a lot of the convention things in high school and college. My favs were the D&D conventions :)

Mom sewed a primo star trek uniform for me my junior year-- I got a lot of jealous looks at the conventions after that.

These days, as I can include a successful graphic novelist and a Rennie among my closest friends, I get more of that world than I really want anymore. :P

39. I went to a couple, it was fun
The promoters who staged the ones I went to kind of sucked, though. They spent a lot of time bitching about actors who couldn't/wouldn't come to *their* con, which I found petty and unnecessary. However, the actors I met were all great (all DS9 and Voyager people) and the merch booths were fun, with lots of unique stuff. That particular company that did the cons in my area folded (no big shock), so alas, there hasn't been one near me for a long time. I'd really like to go to one of the big ones in LA or Vegas sometime.

The sci-fi/fantasy club (of which I am a member) and the gaming club on campus are trying to put together a convention for next fall. If we do, I'm probably going to put together a panel discussion on making sci-fi/fantasy props (without spending a shitload of money). Something I know a little bit about.

dressed like a human being.

They're great fun, but I never saw the interest in dressing up. Just finding cool merchandise and (at the time) getting to learn about the new movie or what's up with the show not coming back... late 80s and early 90s... back when the genre wasn't fettered by reality show fodder...
