Commercials using improper grammar should be banned
Fuck free speech

So since I am still unemployed - since Oct 2007 - which still sucks ass, I watch tv... a lot. If you are home watching TV during the day, you may notice alongside the myriad of judge shows and paternity tests are commercials for: personal injury attorneys, pawn/check cashing/payday loans, online colleges, and bankruptcy attorneys.

There is a commercial for a personal injury (auto crash to be specific) attorney that features a testimonial from 2 white women saying why they called.. the older one states "We was in an accident"

ummm

"We was"????

Is this supposed to make the commercial more "real" and give it a little reality??

It is one thing if due to dialect, lack of education, english as a second language, whatever, if you make an error. But when it is a goddamn script for a goddamn attorney referral service... gah!!!

Seriously, everytime I hear that frickin' commercial I lose it.

1. Hell, the TV newspeople use horrendous grammar.
They don't know about past perfect tenses or using helper verbs such as "have".
They put -ed or -ing on the end of verbs.

:wtf:

2. I remember a big huff over "Winston tastes good like a cigarette should"
"It's AS a cigarette should," protested the grammar police.

3. That's deliberate........
The law firm is targeting a specific audience, and if one of their former clients talks like the target audience does, they're more comfortable in calling that 800 number, or whatever the number is.

That's my theory, anyway.

I've been turning the TV on during the day these past few weeks, just because I'm feeling lazy, and what I can't get over is the number of women who are suing former boyfriends for money they loaned these guys.

These women, it seems, knew these men about two weeks before they move in together and then the woman starts writing the checks or handing over the credit card, the guys get Harleys and all kinds of things, and then they break up, the woman sues, and the guy claims it was all a gift.

Jesus, but there's some serious stupidity out there......................................

5. I am also surprised at how many cell phone suits there are
The whole "I got them a cell phone because they didn't have credit"

My mom wants me to get an additional line and add her to it, and I keep saying no... I cannot imagine letting anyone else have one either.

8. And if Congress is going to act to limit corporate profits...
...it sure as hell won't be in order to promote good grammar.

4. There's an infomercial for a 'guaranteed' car loan deal
It runs through the usual "Unemployed? Bad credit? Divorce? Bankruptcy?" bit, then in big, red letters says, Your Approved!

7. My favorite commercial for naive, ignorant people is
"If you can afford $35 a week for a year, you can own a computer!"

Let's see, that's $1820, so yes, you could buy a damn good computer for that, but the one they show in the ad is a low-end, outdated desktop model in beige.

10. It could be intentional. I doubt it.
Edited on Fri May-08-09 09:02 AM by DS1
It could be designed so some ~other~ dumb motherfucking piece of shit watching the commercial would say to themselves "Well Golldangit, if an a dumb shit like that can win a court case, ain't no reason for me not ta bein either!"

11. Just curious...why does it matter that they are two "white women"?
Why does race even matter? Grammar is grammar.

12. When ms mitchum was designing ads, I always reminded her that...
she was trying to sell tires or whatever not to George Plimpton, but to Yahoos.
Improper grammar is appropriate and effective for many markets.
