1. Love the harpsichord in that tune
Doubtless a Brian Jones thing. Lotsa controlled menace in that song.

"Now she gets her kicks in Stepney, not in Knightsbridge anymore
So don't you play with me, cos you're playin' with fire....."

2. Ha!
I always thought it went "Now she gets her kicks instantly"

It's like "Groovin" by the Young Rascals- I heard "Life would be ecstasy, you and me endlessly" as "You and me and Leslie." Has possibilities. . .

What's the deal with Stepney and Knightsbridge?

3. IIRC at that time
Stepney (anywhere near Spinal Tap's Squatney, perhaps?) was a nouveau riche part of Swinging London and Knightsbridge was more working class. Anyone w/better info please feel free to enlighten.

20. and a janitor at the studio sang backup!

At the end of an all-night session Jagger and Richards were the only Stones still awake, and they were desperate for another voice.

4. I guess "Rocks Off". There are almost too many great RS songs to even choose, but
Edited on Wed May-06-09 06:15 PM by Mike 03
when I heard that song for the first time, which is the first song on the album "Exile on Main Street," I stopped thinking of the Stones as a historical cliche and began realizing they were artists, and that these older albums were worth paying attention to. And this was a long, long time after that album came out that I finally heard it, because I read that Hunter Thompson liked it.

It just blew my head off.

But like I said, my list would be very long, if you asked me list great Stones songs.

"Rocks Off" and "Let it Loose" are the two that haunt me, and they are both from the same album.

I think Scorsese uses "Let it Loose" in THE DEPARTED. In fact, that entire album becomes a theme of the movie, because when the DiCaprio character provides his phone-tap records to his witness on a DVD wrapped in an "Exile on Main Street" case, which is interesting.

ON EDIT:

I love "Angie" from Goat's Head Soup.

8. I defy anyone to listen to Jagger sing the line "she was always right...
on time" and then claim that there wasn't a time when he could ever sing. His vocal is stunning.
Of course, now he can't sing for shit. For a long time they have been an embarassment. The world's most lucrative oldies act.

once upon a time.

16. I remember buying that CD for the first time and playing it on the way home from the store.
Stunning.

I think it was the first Stones song that I heard out of the context of oldies radio.

24. Have you seen "Bottle Rocket?"
It's a pretty cool song on its own, but what really made me love it was Dignan's last stand in Bottle Rocket.

27. It's a bit uneven, but overall a great movie for a writer/director/actors debut on a shoestring
budget.

Anyway, if you haven't seen the end, it's one of those simple bits of slapstick that really works for some reason. And it uses 2000 Man, which despite being wholly unrelated to the setting, plot or pretty much anything else, just seems to fit it perfectly.

6. Impossible to choose a favorite, but "Get Off of My Cloud" is way up there:

Although, considering the Stones' advanced ages nowadays, I like to sing it to myself as "Hey! Hey! You! You! Get off of my lawn!"

14. Here is my REAL favorite Rolling Stones...
Fool to Cry

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjzstjZiDk0

When I come home baby
And I've been working all night long
I put my daughter on my knee, and she say
Daddy whats wrong?
She whispers in my ear so sweet
You know what she says?
Daddy you're a fool to cry
You're a fool to cry
And it makes me wonder why.

You know, I got a woman
And she lives in the poor part of town
And I go see her sometimes
And we make love, so fine
I put my head on her shoulder
She says, tell me all your troubles.
You know what she says? she says
Daddy you're a fool to cry
You're a fool to cry
And it makes me wonder why.

Daddy you're a fool to cry
Oh, I love you so much baby
Daddy you're a fool to cry
Daddy you're a fool to cry, yeah
She says, daddy youre a fool to cry
Youre a fool to cry
And it makes me wonder why.

She says, daddy youre a fool to cry
Daddy youre a fool to cry
Daddy youre a fool to cry
Daddy youre a fool to cry

Even my friends say to me sometimes
And make out like I dont understand them
You know what they say
They say, daddy youre a fool to cry
Youre a fool to cry
Youre a fool to cry
And it makes me wonder why.

Im a fool baby
Im a fool baby
Im a certified fool, now
I want to tell ya
Gotta tell ya, baby
Im a fool baby
Im a fool baby
Certified fool for ya, mama, come on
Im a fool
Im a fool
Im a fool

11. Used to do that one as one of our covers in a mostly originals band
I played a quiet , ethereal flute as background on a lot of it ( no solo though; worked just fine as a subtle background and no more). Hard to pick a single favorite Stones song; probably either Gimme Shelter or Moonlight Mile. Also, have mentioned this before, but can't let a thread about the Stones go by without mentioning my incredible, and wholly unearned, good fortune in having played at least about a dozen gigs with Bobby Keys. I still think back on singing Can't You Hear Me Knockin' etc while he blew sax and can't , to this day, quite believe that it happened.

Love that chord progression. Circular and hopeless. And there's room for arrangement.

30. "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'"
For the harsh junkyard dawg bark of Keef's rhythm guitar, the soulful Bobby Keyes sax solo and Mick Taylor's sublime concluding lead solo - his was a sound that was equal parts ground glass and the finest silk. Stones Heaven for me.
