Freeper Smack-Down going on at Facebook. Need your help.
An ultra-right-wing friend of my sister is claiming that Barack Obama has rejected the National Day Of Prayer (whatever that is...) and is screaming about it all over her profile page. A bunch of uber-Christianist trogs have piled on and started hammering anyone, like me, for instance, who mentioned common-sensical things like Matthew 6:5-7.

I haven't even heard of something like President Obama thumbing his nose and giving the raspberry to national days of prayer, but help me clear this up. Nothing on Snopes that I could find...

(BTW, my sister "friended" an old friend from high school whom she truly cares for, but didn't know had turned into a right-wing douche.)

1. Looks to be evangelical fervor: (AP) -

COLORADO SPRINGS - Organizers of this week's National Day of Prayer still don't know whether the White House will participate.

The event's evangelical character earned it a White House welcome during President George W. Bush's eight years in office. But Brian Toon, vice chairman of the National Day of Prayer Task Force, says to date, there's been no mention of a White House observance being held this year.

According to an article this past week in the Colorado Springs Gazette, advocacy groups for so-called inclusive dialogue on faith in America are "trying to break what they perceive as the organization's monopoly on the event."

The newspaper went on to say that the "Interfaith Alliance and Jews on First sent a letter this month to President Barack Obama asking him to declare that the National Day of Prayer is for Americans of all faiths - and even for nonbelievers."

2. He has chosen not to host the event @ our White House
However, he is recognizing the day:

“President Obama is a committed Christian and believes that we should be engaging Americans of faith in efforts to renew our country,” one White House official said. “He is following the tradition of Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and others by signing a proclamation honoring the National Day of Prayer, while continuing to work with communities of faith to improve our country.”

Personally, I think the National Day of Prayer is fundie bullshit, especially when one considers that it was made into a big deal by Ronnie Rayguns and James (the hater) Dobson.

5. Yep
I can understand the confusion though. While the DFP is a wonderful publication, that domain name still gives me pause.

6. yeah, Los Angeles used to have a periodical called the L.A. Free Press, which
Harlan Ellison referred to as The Freep. The nickname gives me pause to this day.
