What are some good snack foods that give you a boost?
Despite getting decent sleep at night, I find that I'm in serious danger of nodding off at my desk here at work lately. Granted, I spend hours sitting in one place typing and listening to the monotonous drone of docs dictating, but geez, it's getting worse all the time. I need to find something I can drink or eat, besides drinking copious amounts of caffeine, that'll give me a boost and keep me from nodding off.

Ideas greatly appreciated.... anyone???

1. Try some dulse.
It tastes salty (but is actually fairly low in sodium), is high in iron and other minerals, and while it won't fill you up, it does give you that satisfaction of munching on something.

5. Okay, stupid question
I've never even heard of dulse.... what is it? I like salty, so I definitely want to hear more about this one.

11. Ahh, now that you say it, I remember
See? I'm really not that dumb :D

I'll have to see if I can find it around here. We have a couple of health food stores, so I'm sure I can track it down.

10. It is a very tasty type of seaweed.
If it is fresh, it is soft and a little chewy and it gets crunchier over time as it dries out. It keeps about forever if it isn't allowed to get damp. It is also highly addictive, but it won't hurt you - very nutritious.

If you can't find it locally, I've ordered a lot of things from this place: https://seaveg.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=12&products_id=1 and they have a wide array of products.

Another favorite of ours is the Dulse Granules with Garlic. It comes in a shaker like "picnic" style salt and pepper shakers. I figure it is probably the dust from processing the leave dulse that they just mix with garlic and repackage, but it is a great seasoning. It also ads the flavor of salt without adding much sodium.

2. Any combination of carbs + protein
Should be good for a little boost... so an apple and a few small pieces of cheese, or a few crackers with peanut butter, things like that.

I'd suggest upbeat music, that works for me most of the time, but it sounds like that wouldn't fit into your job scenario.

4. Nope, no music here
Can't hear much over the doc's voices, so not really an option. The apples and cheese sounds good tho, so I'll try that tomorrow!

15. Yep, that makes sense.
The other thing to watch out is that you don't overload on carbs during your meals... that'll give you a big rush of sugar and then a big slump after that. (I say this as a diabetic, not just talking out my ass, LOL)

Hope you find something that works to keep you feeling awake!

3. Try some
Almond Milk. You can get it in vanilla and chocolate. It's good for your cholesterol and is lactose free. You can buy them in 32 ounce cartons and in packs of six individual servings. It would give you that lift you need and it's good for you also.

Oh, and it tastes good too.

8. Hmmm yeah, not so much
I still have to manage to stay in a seated position and type and, besides, that might make me a little less likely to be appropriate. Next thing you know, I'll be off screaming at the docs about their horrible dictating habits.... chaos would ensue, then job loss, spiral into drug addiction..... AGGGHHHHHHH :P

13. Fruit works for me....
and/or some cheese or yogurt. Just avoid the empty carbs.

I tried 5-hour energy shots once. NEVER again! :scared:

17. I debated trying the 5 hour energy stuff
I haven't because I'm afraid it'll make me a nervous wreck and I'll be screwing up important medical info because I'm wigged out. So what exactly did it do to you to make you all :scared: about it???

18. I was jittery and couldn't concentrate properly on anything....
Perhaps prior to a workout it would have been OK, but sitting at a desk? Not so much.

...and unfortunately, the John Belushi / SNL clip has been removed from YouTube "due to a copyright claim by NBC Universal."
