Is it bad that I look forward to stabbings??
Edited on Tue May-05-09 02:19 AM by stewartcolbert08
Okay so I work for a 911 call and dispatch center and I work graveyard shift. So if nothing major goes down its like the longest night ever. I have been thinking about this and I have been so bored at work the past few weeks but then tonight we had a pseudo-stabbing and I just got this rush trying to find the suspect, find out what he drives, his physical etc.....So I got to thinking when I first started this job I had a very different outlook on life. I thought everyone was generally good and maybe went through some rough patches here and there. Now I kinda think that everyone is assholes and liars. Take tonights stabbing for example. I was so set on finding this guy searching associate friends who lived in the area, old addresses, car descriptions anything that would help them ya know. But then I start looking at history on the victim and...........she is a total lying crack whore! DSS took her kid in Feb, she admitted to smoking cocaine, she has a restraining order w/ this guy and they are both crack heads and alcoholics. I was like wtf?! I used to be so optimistic, call it even a little naive but I really thought in this job I was going to make a difference and ....LOL people really are just lying assholes! Just wanted a bit of a vent! I like you guys tho you are cool, I am just saying ya know! LOL :toast:

4. Are you, like, 19?
I never did it, but I imagine working 911 you're going to come across lots of assholes and liars. And lots of unlucky and broken people. There's tons of misery in the world.

5. I think what the OP was getting at
was.. That usually, you feel empathy toward a crime victim..but the more years go by the more cynical you become..

9. Cynicism's a nasty and deadening thing
I feel it growing in me as the years go by and I don't like it. I sometimes wonder if it's really cynicism or is it just becoming more "aware". It would be nice to stay in that medium area between naive idealism and cynicism.

I hear what you're saying though, and it's easy to imagine it being extremely hard to avoid becoming cynical after a time in professions such as yours, or teachers, or anybody that has to deal with difficult people day in and day out. Hard to avoid burn out, which I liken to an advanced case of cynicism.

12. I agree and it also goes in hand in hand with the
us vs them attitude prevelant in most large law enforcement agencies today. The attitude pervades everything, not only the cops on the street, but the community as a whole. Sadly, many officers who remain in a command for long periods of time, tend to view all the members of that community as the enemy, that leads in turn to brutality cases. On the other hand, the attitude of the community itself worsens toward the officers, which leads to the community allowing itself to be held hostage by the criminal element, because of their refusal to assist the police by providing information. Its a never ending, self defeating circle...

6. Hmm
First off, whats w/ the "are you like 19" comment?

Yes, there is alot of broken people but explain to me how its okay that Dss took this chics 2 year old because there was dirty dishes and laundry stacked up to the ceiling and dog shit all over the house and drug paraphernalia all over the house, no food and plenty of alcohol, LOL i guess in this case the 2 year old is the "unlucky" one. I am one of the most generous people you will ever meet, I am the only ones left here with the "give them the benefit of the doubt" attitude. But how far is is supposed to go? It's not okay, no matter how broken you become or what a bad child hood you had. Everyone has problems. All you can do is work hard and hope for the best but instead this girl wants to smoke crack and raise her baby in a dump and not think twice about it. I am going to the academy soon because I know there are broken people in bad situations that ACTUALLY NEED and want help but this particular case is total bullshit! She should be in jail too! AND we never even found her, she is a fucking liar she wasn't even stabbed just coked out of her mind! Sorry to get a little agitated but don't get all self righteous on me. Yes there is sadness and broken people but alot of these people don't give a shit about law enforcement and don't want our help so at that point what are you supposed to do?

13. I think you are being hard on the OP
obviously I work in the same field as they do. Im guessing they are realtively new to the job. I have 11 years on now, now that doesnt make me an expert by any means. However, I can relate to the OP's feeling, you are called on to do a job, to assist a citizen and when you attempt to render aid, or provide a solution....time after time, your direction or advice is ignored. This leads to burnout, if a child is banging its head on the wall, and you keep telling them to stop...then remove them, but they continue to bang away..in the end, there isnt a whole lot you can do..
