What's a good movie you watched recently?
I just watched "The Reader" today and I thought it was amazing! It was heart-breaking.

1. Not sure this qualifies as recently, but it was the last really good movie I watched,
about four or five weeks ago: CHANGELING, directed by Clint Eastwood.

It has haunted me ever since, and I did re-watch it about two weeks ago. It is a chilling, well constructed and shocking film. It also has more than one theme, which is not easy to do when writing a screenplay. It deals with the treatment of women, the incompetence of law enforcement, the death penalty, as well as some other issues which, were I to mention them, would open another can of worms.

But since UNFORGIVEN, Clint Eastwood has become a truly brilliant director. And this film is yet another testament to his discernment and aptitude.

5. Still want to see that.
Heard mixed reviews. People either love it or hate it. Many said is was slow.

6. It's slow-paced and long, about 2 1/2 hours.
Edited on Mon May-04-09 08:50 PM by Starbucks Anarchist
It also has stretches of silence, including all of the first 15 minutes, but I was riveted the whole time.

The cinematography, music and overall technical aspects of it were brilliant, and Daniel Day-Lewis' performance is awesome.

7. Did you see No Country for Old Men?

That one and Blood were the two that battled it out a few years ago at awards time. I thought No Country was awesome.

8. Yes.

Both movies are somewhat similar -- themes of greed and evil, and both were actually filmed in Marfa, TX, though I prefer "There Will Be Blood" if I had to choose.

18. Those first 15 minutes are great
As are the last 10 on the bowling lanes. Day-Lewis really was amazing.

Pretty much everything between the first 15 and the last 10 are ... well, also great :)

10. Clean, Shaven
Peter Winter is a young schizophrenic who is desperately trying to get his daughter back from her adoptive family. He attempts to function in a world that, for him, is filled with strange voices, electrical noise, disconcerting images, and jarringly sudden emotional shifts. He clings to his humanity like a raft, barely afloat in a sea of terror.

Peter Greene is excellent in this, and the use of sound throughout this movie is unlike any other I've seen. A strange and excellent movie that will stick with you after you're done watching it.

Even this clip will make you go :wtf:

and Outlander

During the reign of the Vikings, Kainan, a man from a far-off world, crash lands on Earth, bringing with him an alien predator known as the Moorwen. Though both man and monster are seeking revenge for violence committed against them, Kainan leads the alliance to kill the Moorwen by fusing his advanced technology with the Viking's Iron Age weaponry.

Talk about a premise ripe for silliness. Yet the movie is played straight, and it works perfectly. A great popcorn movie, and better than most so-called summer blockbusters we see every year, imo.

12. The ones I love best are a BIT off the beaten track, like "Topsy Turvy"
Topsy Turvy is about the backstage at a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. Fantastic.

14. "Withnail and I"
Very good British comedy/drama, made in the 80's but set in 1969. It's been pigeonholed as something of a "stoner film," but anyone going in expecting a British Cheech and Chong will be severely disappointed as drug use actually plays a fairly minor role. More than anything, it's about the contentious friendship between the two main characters (hence the title), and the bizarre situations in which they find themselves.

it's not good in the sense that a movie is, but if you want somethign with really cool action scenes and special effects for a fun theatre experience, i think that's the one to see. Story wise, writing and acting: meh

But everything else is cool

17. Frost/Nixon
Great acting all around. I was afraid it would be boring and I was kind of tired when we put it in, but it definitely kept me awake. It succeeds in both villainizing and humanizing Nixon, too.

and Open Range.

Same night, so they count as one. Both really good. Open Range - great cowboy movie. Monster - very sad, very disturbing, well worth seeing. Should be seen, and I'm glad Charlize Theron got an oscar for it. She did an absolutely amazing job portraying this pathetic character who was just born to lose.

22. The Offense with Sean Connery
A forgotten masterpiece. It's about a cop who comes unspooled over a vile crime.

When anyone says Connery isn't an actor; he's a movie star, tell them to watch this one.

23. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Aesthetically gorgeous and painterly (naturally, as its director, Julian Schnabel, is a painter), extremely well acted all around, especially by Mathieu Amalric, Emmanuelle Seigner, Marie-Josée Croze and Max von Sydow, and funny, touching, thought-provoking without being sappy or sentimental. Very much worth watching, y'all.

PS: Enjoy the movie, but be sure also to read this as a corrective and a reminder that movies are neither real life nor the the works they're based on, but their own entities with their own (often too-) powerful realities:
