Rob Dibble annoys me as a baseball announcer
Edited on Sun Apr-26-09 02:54 PM by TZ
He does the Nationals games. He isn't horrible per se..he's definitely knowledgeable BUT the guy refers to the Nationals as "we" or "us". Dude..come on...You never played for the Nats/Expos. In fact you won a WS with the Reds..But you got fired from your cushy ESPN job and hired by a franchise looking for a big name to give them publicity. You are a hired gun.
Is this homerism something all local announcers do or is it just Dibble being an idiot....

1. I had wondered what had happened to him. He used to be on Dan Patricks
radio show, but got cut in 04 or 05. He really is a homer.

2. Rob Dibble annoys me as a right-wing pig
Why are so many pitchers right-wing pigs, anyway? Besides Dibble, off the top of my head, there's Curt Schilling, Steve Carlton, even Dave Dravecky. :eyes:

14. It's not just pitchers
It's ballplayers in general.

Major-leaguers are guys who've pretty much spent their lives playing baseball, which is a rather conservative game behind the scenes. I've known a lot of minor-leaguers, and free thinking in baseball is frowned upon. Look at what happens when you do get a free thinker, like Bill Lee: They get nicks like "Spaceman" and become as well known for their "flakiness" as their baseball skills, maybe more so.

Pitchers do tend to be flakier, though, especially left-handers. A right-hander in the minors once explained to me, while standing next to a left-hander, that this is because of the Earth's rotation, magnetic fields, etc.

17. World Series rings are absurdly large
I met Chris Carpenter, and he had on his 2006 World Series ring, and it was ridiculous.

4. I have caught part of 5 games so far
the second day Dibble and the play-by-play spent 3 innings just tearing down the opening day centerfielder. He was physically and mentally unable to perform at any level according to them.

I must be used to more national teams (Cubs/BraveS) but not only are they complete HOMERS for the Nats...they are HOMERS FOR THE NATS. Everyone on the team and everything about the team appears to be "tied for third in the NL" in everything. Dunn is third in the league in OnBasePercentage, the team is third in the league in batting etc. Except THEY SUCK. Pitching especially. They completely blew a 3 run lead in the ninth last Saturday after the play-by-play guy was already writing the next days headline in the *gulp* Washington Times (I have heard that they have an okay sports page actually) "Nats beat Marlins", seems the Marlins are 18-3 lifetime against the Nats make that 19-4 they won the game in extra innings.

Their was no one in the stands on a beautiful Saturday afternoon-the broadcast seemed more interested in selling tickets than dealing with the fact that the Nats are outgunned in every aspect of talent.

BTW the centerfielder they were hyping (forget both players' names) snapped his ankle last week making a catch at the wall so they are stuck with the guy they spent 45 minutes ragging out.

7. He'd be a huge upgrade in their bullpen.
(Oh come on, somebody had to say it.)

I remember him as one of the ESPN guys who was constantly pushing the "if you never played in the major leagues, you don't know anything about the game" line. They've got way too many of those types even now that Dibble is gone.

11. Rob Dibble was a member of the legendary "Nasty Boys" of the Cincinnati Reds
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nasty_Boys_(Cincinnati_Reds)

The Nasty Boys were a trio of relief pitchers from the Cincinnati Reds: Norm Charlton, Rob Dibble and Randy Myers. In 1990, the "Nasty Boys" were key figures in the Reds' charge to the World Championship. According to Rob Dibble, the "Nasty Boys" really was a fivesome including Tim Layana and Tim Birtsas however they have gone down in history as a trio.<1>

During the 1990 Cincinnati Reds season, Charlton, Dibble, and Myers combined for 44 saves (Meyers with 31, Dibble with 11, and Charlton with 2) and 351 strikeouts, although some of Charlton's 117 strikeouts came as a starter, as he was moved to the rotation late in the season.<2>

1990 World Series
The "Nasty Boys" pitched a combined 8 2/3 innings in the World Series and gave up 0 earned runs on six hits. Rob Dibble got a win in Game 2 and Randy Myers picked up one save in Game 4.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitchers_who_struck_out_three_batters_on_nine_pitches

Dibble is also one of the few pitchers to do a 9-pitches (all strikes)/3-outs inning also known as the "Immaculate Inning"

In Major League Baseball, 38 pitchers have thrown a nine-pitch, three-strikeout half-inning, throwing nothing but strikes a total of 41 times. This feat is also known as an immaculate inning.<1>

Great shakes to root for lately.Between Marge Schott , Pete Rose and a whole lot of losing seasons, Reds certainly have been competing with Nationals for worst franchise in the last few years...helped along by idiot ex-red Jim Bowden..:eyes:
