Buying a Jeep sounds like a lot more fun than paying down the mortgage.
I've been looking at four wheel drive vehicles for about a week now. I've looked at Jeep Wranglers, Toyota RAV4s, and Honda CR-Vs. There were several times last winter when a four wheel drive vehicle would have come in handy. One problem, though, is that those vehicles don't get great gas mileage. The Toyota and the Honda are about the best you are going to get for those kind of vehicles and they get about 25 mpg overall. The Jeep is a little cheaper, but the gas mileage really takes a nose-dive on those; about 18 mpg overall. That's for new vehicles. If I were going to buy one I think I'd go with the Honda. I get a discount on new Hondas because I work for one of their parts suppliers.

Then the sensible part of me takes over. I've got a 2002 Chevy S-10 that's in good shape and paid off. It sucks in the snow and I wouldn't want to go off-roading with it, but it usually does what I need it to do. I can also have my condo paid off in about 3 years if I don't make any other large purchases and assuming my S-10 makes it that long.

But I want a Honda.

I think I'll go write that principal-only check now.

1. My dear Droopy!
Oh yeah...buying a new vehicle is a lot of fun!

But ...

You do want to pay off your mortgage, don't you?

Just think how great that'll feel!

Good to see you tonight!

:hi:

3. Yes, Peggy, I need discipline.
I'm usually pretty good at that, but sometimes I get weak.

4. The Unlimited? Damn, I've been waiting for my Wrangler to fall apart so I can get it.
It just won't fall apart no matter what I do to it.

7. I know! Mine's a '92, but only 55K miles. Still, I'm going to trade it in anyway.

6. You can manage three more winters, right?
Pay off your place, then buy the car. In the meantime, keep your eyes open and if you see a sweet enough deal on one you'll be that waiting doesn't make sense you'll be closer to a paid off home and in even better financial condition to buy a car.
