2. Because it fools ya into thinking it's Spring
then it takes you on a cold wammy, at least according to T.S. Eliot.

3. I'm not sure it's the cruelest month. There are people with birthdays ..
in April.

Being born...
is a pretty cruel trick to play on some poor unsuspecting infant who has no idea what he's in for, wouldn't you say?

13. Yes
Imagine the shock... comfort and warmth and closeness to your mother, then BAM -- bright lights and cold and intrusive strangers' hands.

4. It makes fun of all the months ending in 'r' and 'y'
Very nasty month. It called me a platypus once.

5. Not to wax religious,
Edited on Wed Mar-10-04 01:46 PM by ave_in_hbg
but it is month of Easter.

If I remember my poetry right (T.S. Eliot...is it Prufrock?), in context, it would seem to be reminding the old of their younger days which they cannot get back, and thus opportunities lost forever.

6. I think February is the cruelest, usually--though this last one wasn't bad
It's cruel because it's the deadest of dead winter, usually the coldest, harshest, most miserable.

Why did Eliot assert that April was? I don't know, but I think it may be because it's supposed to be spring, full of the promise of warmth and renewal, but it's usually muddy, wet, damp, chilled. I always liked April though.

Maybe he was also thinking in terms of Easter, in a Gibson-y way. But if you're a Christian, wouldn't you think the resurrection overshadowed the passion?

9. It's not so much the passion/resurrection
but that people are so sinful that both were necessary.

8. April is the month
in some places, where things start blooming, but there is nothing to eat. If you're an animal you've almost used up all your stored goodies or fat. If you're a human who didn't quite put enough away to eat, you would be just a few weeks shy of starvation.
