Anyone have a Playstation 2? Game question......
For the most part I have 3 or 4 role playing/driving type games (GTA: Vice City, Virtua Fighter 4, Crazy Taxi). They all work fine and I play them semi-frequently. I purchased a copy of Madden 2K3 football a few months ago, and when I loaded it in my machine it just would not read. The driver would sound like it was starting to read but then nothing would happen. I had bought it used so I just chalked it up to a bum deal. I only paid $10 for it so no big loss.

So then I found a copy of the same game used again and I bought it. And I'm experiencing the same problem more or less. The screen is black and it sounds like it's reading the disc but nothing comes up.

Did I just coincidentally get burned by the same exact game twice or am I missing something here? I realize this is a weird problem that nobody else has probably had but I figured I'd give it a shot.

1. My kids and several
of their friends have the Playstation II and there is a lnown issue with them not reading any game disks or not reading certain game disks after having worked fine for a year or so. I believe there is an 800 number for Sony customer service that you can call and tell them about the problem and they will fix it for free if you ship it in. I am trying to find the info on Google.

2. Thanks....if you find it please let me know...
I'll keep checking this thread. The system is only 2-3 months old and all the other games seem to work fine.

3. My copy works fine...
but I bought it new and unwrapped. It could be that you got a couple of bad used disks (if that first one was used). That's not all that uncommon, really, which is why I try to never buy them used.

I found the 800 number for Sony. 1-800-345-7669. From what I understand, there is no warranty expiration for this issue and they will fix it for free if you ship it in to them. I really need to do this with my kid's console myself.

(on edit)

Here is a link to a discussion board where several people have this complaint. Good Luck !

5. Which way do you have your system mounted?
If you have it mounted vertically, the disc may be unbalanced and not reading correctly. I had this problem with a used copy of a game, as well as with a movie from Blockbuster, on which the stickers that label the movie a Blockbuster copy were causing it to wobble as it spun. If this is not the case, as it was not with a friend whose PS2 would not read any games or movies (this was right after PS2 came out), he called the 800 number that has been provided above, and was able to sort it out with Sony. Hope you get it working!

6. Find a repair shop
and have your PS2 cleaned inside and out.

7. The Madden games have a strong copy-protection
That may be the cause of your problem. Contact either EA or Sony costumer support.

8. Madden
I had the same problem with a copy of Madden 2K3 which I bought used. I returned it and got another copy and it now works fine. I suspect it's a problem with the anti-copy software like the other poster said.

9. Canned air and brush disc.
Keep them around and use any time your PS2 doesn't read a disc.

10. Disc Read Error?
After 2 years of use, my PS2 will not play any game unless it is mounted on its side. Sometimes it wont be a bitch (with black backed games, anyways).

Also, I heard something that works for people is to flip it upside down? never tried. like have it mounted horizontally, and turn it 180. Lots of peoples PS2's don't play blue backed games well.

12. Blue Backed games!
The only Playstation 2 discs that won't play for me have blue backs! I noticed this after the 2nd or third disk. I've never had a black-backed one fail. What's the difference?
