A Sound of Spring...the Mockingbird...
A mockingbird just started up his nightly song, outside my window...

I just love listening to it!

It says...spring is here...

What says spring to you?

1. We have a pair of mockingbirds that rule one corner of the yard.
They nest in a big cedar tree, no other birds or oats allowed.

2. My dear texanwitch!
So, do you get to see babies?

I've never had that...

I get the song...

3. Only after the babies can fly.
Even then the parent birds guard the babies.

Our cats have learned to stay away.

4. The parents can really be ferocious...
How cool you get to see them, though!

5. The young birds are really cute without all their flight feathers.
We lost a lot of birds because of Hurricane Ike.

The bird population is not the same.

We also lost a lot of trees.

7. We lost a lot of local birds.
The ones that didn't have a place to hid the winds.

I don't need to refill the bird feeders as much as last year.

We lost a lot of our wooded area, the center was cut.

It was a big patch of woods, a place for the birds to ride out a storm.

The woods was native, never cut.

It was a great place to walk and bird watch, and small animals lived there.

The Gulf coast area has not recovered, it is really sad.

8. Daffodils, male goldfinches in their MacLeod tartan, insane robins
bouncing around the yard, prep'ing the veggie and herb gardens, not having to suit up like an astronaut to check mail, the frog's evening song, the green mist in the budding trees, the yeasty scent of warm earth after a gentle rain.

I love Spring.

11. My dear sarge43!
It's my favorite season too...

Out here in California, we don't have a lot of the same things you do, but the green mist in the trees we do have!

It's so lovely...

They glow with an almost unearthly light.

14. I haven't heard any mockingbirds singing at night yet this year. I just recently learned
that it is only the bachelor males that sing at night. I've been watching a nest full of cardinals in my climbing rose on the front fence. There are three in the next and it's at a height that makes it really easy to check when the parents aren't at the nest. I just discovered them last weekend.

Ah, I think I've heard that, that the bachelor males are the ones who sing...

Looking for a mate...

And how cool you can see into that nest! You'll get to watch the whole nesting bit!

Are you close enough to take some pictures? How cool that would be...

16. When the bulbs start poking up
When me and my Ex first moved in here ten years ago..he did nothing but plant bulbs. He must have planted 300 of them. But they grow and look so pretty. Irises nnd other bulbs i have no idea what they are called.

My ex has been gone for 6 years now but every spring his bulbs pop up and flower. I really enjoy them as do my Grandparents. I like the robin family that lives around here too. We have doves and their coos drive me crazy with my hearing aids. WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?!?! Oh, it's just a dove.

Bulbs do really well where there are cold winters...

We have some here, but not the way you do. We also have doves but I haven't heard them as much recently as I have the mockingbirds.

Hi Peggy,
The mockingbirds sound lovely. Of course there are always others like when I finally get to plant tomatoes! I'm heading to California tomorrow to meet my sweet little Grand Niece Amelia Ann.

Peace

26. Listen to the Mockingbird
Listen to the Mockingbird

Last night I dreamed of my Halley
Of my Halley, my sweet Halley
Last night I dreamed of my Halley
For the thought of her is one that never dies

She's sleeping now in the valley
In the valley, my sweet Halley
She's sleeping now in the valley
And the Mockingbird is singing where she lies

Listen to the Mockingbird, listen to the Mockingbird
Oh the Mockingbird is singing oe'er her grave
Listen to the Mockingbird, listen to the Mockingbird
Still singing where the yellow roses grow

How well do I yet remember
I remember, I remember
How well do I yet remember
For the thought of her is one that never dies

It was in that sweet September
In September, I remember
It was in that sweet September
That the Mockingbird was singing far and wide

Listen to the Mockingbird, listen to the Mockingbird
Oh the Mocking bird still singing oe'er her grave
Listen to the Mockingbird, listen to the Mockingbird
Oh the Mockingbird still singing in the spring
