CBC News. Fructose, like high fructose corn syrup, results in more belly fat, more diabetes, more
heart disease. People who drink glucose gain weight too but not on the belly so much.

2. skeptical
I've seen the study. Quite flawed. And people are citing things that do have fructose in them as being healthy.
Sugar is sugar. Just cut back on sweeteners. As I biologist there is really no functional difference between sugars..they are processed the same. I really hate junk science. Flame away but any study that says "sugar is metabolized in the brain" which this does is bad. Thats like saying we breath through our skin...:eyes:

4. Does this quote from the link misrepresent the results?
Metabolic changes

In the 10-week study, 17 subjects consumed a quarter of their calories from fructose-sweetened beverages and another 15 subjects drank the equivalent amount in glucose-sweetened beverages. Participants had an average age of 50 and a body mass index of 29, which is considered overweight.

Both groups put on the same amount of weight, but only the fructose group showed the other differences.

People drinking fructose became less sensitive to insulin, which helps control glucose levels in the blood, and showed signs of dyslipidemia such as high cholesterol.

The long-term effects of fructose remain unknown, but it's clear that chronic overconsumption of dietary sugars in general is harmful to health, the commentators said.

"For our part, we will continue to aim for moderation of balanced caloric ingestion without excluding the occasional sweet soda," they concluded.

26. I'd rather have sugar than high-fructose corn syrup
We're being fed way too much processed shit just to save a buck.

5. "Consumed a quarter of their calories from (these) beverages"...?
10 weeks, 32 subjects, based on BMI. Sure, okay.

6. I'm confused
I thought fructose was the natural sugar in fruit...are they implying eating too many apples, bananas, etc. makes your belly fat and more likely to get diabetes?

8. In the news story they focused in on a kid drinking OJ and how her mother
was wary of that because she didn't want her child gaining weight.

13. I gave up fruit juices long ago, and only eat lowish sugar fruits.
I watch sugar in everything, even 'natural' sugar.

10. Mostly.
I believe some fruits are dominated by glucose, though. (I think grape juice is mostly glucose?)

11. So how much fruit juice does a child drink each day?
Reading the link I dismiss this as junk science meant to disinform people.

15. Not even at breakfast time in a four ounce glass?
I agree fruit juice is best consumed in small doses...and there is nothing like water...cool, clear water...But y'know, breakfast is supposed to be a pickmeup energy sort of meal...Do they say anything about putting maple syrup on pancakes on weekend breakfasts? Or is a glass of water the answer to everything?

18. I wasn't paying that much attention to the story until the end when they said it resulted in belly
fat. I would think OJ in the morning would be fine. Just don't use it to fill a kids' thirst all day long. Make water an option.

14. If we ate only what was in season, we'd only consume fruits in the summer
for the most part. And that would be right before we'd need to gain a few pounds to prepare for winter with less food available.

At least in many parts of the world. *If* we were eating seasonally.

We simply wouldn't have access to fructose foods all year round.

19. Yes I didn't think of that. I have huge strawberries in my fridge. Yeah that is a change
in food buying habits over 20 years. Of course we have more selection of everything these days.

20. And we'd eat beef jerky in the winter and be real skinny
But rugged, like Kit Carson and his mountain men...How have all those people who live in the tropics managed to survive having all that fruit around?

21. They use palm oil to cook with not so much butter. Maybe that is why they are skinny. I know
personally for me I couldn't take that much palm oil and put myself on a diet by the end of my trip to Margarita Island off Venezuela. I just couldn't stand eating that much palm oil.

22. If the people in the tropics are natives, then their bodies of course process that native diet
so that it is optimal for them.

23. what I'm trying to say is that I'm fine...
And no I don't drink a lot of fruit juice to me it is a luxury...I eat a lot of vegetables (my favorites: peas, broccoli, cabbage, celery, spinach, onions, tomatoes, et al) and I do like meat a few times a week. I don't like beef, though,so I'm limited to pork chops or chicken. (I know, but it tastes good) Fish is good but so expensive it's rare...I detest fast food and junk food, no cheetos for me! I do like popcorn from time to time, though.

I try to take care of my diet and I'm within ten pounds of my high school weight(when I was considered a wimp) so even if I keel over tomorrow at least I know I've tried...

24. You are eating really healthily. Don't change a thing. But for someone like me who is trying to
loose weight and having a hard time of it...this information is valuable to me. I don't drink lots of juice but last night I bought some "less sugar" Sunny D. Of course that means my diet was gone today. I bet ya Sunny D. isn't event OJ. LOL!

27. well good luck and godspeed to you!
Losing weight is really hard, I've bounced back and forth all my adult life. My optimal weight (for my height) is 165, that's a little low, I've fluctuated between 170-210 pretty much...I do think mood and attitude has tons to do with this, however! I'm currently at 180...and I've got grapefruit juice and cranberry juice in the fridge! They taste so sour, I can only drink a little bit at a time...
