I think a raccoon got her... Everytime I see one I get a little sad.

The lunch doesn't cost anything, but it's not free.

Before the CDs were added it was just the revolving PVC.

Before that it was a Twirl-A-Squirrel.

They have always proven to be up to the task. Even when there's easy food on the ground they enjoy going after the more difficult stuff. It must taste better.

67. I kept all those AOL disks
because I have a difficulty throwing out items that may someday have a utility (if my ladyfriend was to move in, 95% of my stuff would be at the curb the next day.)

I have a love of creatures large and small, but I also have a need to capture photos of their trials. I created the squirrel obstacle course as well as the movable bird feeder for the simple purpose of capturing photos of creatures being challenged but not harmed. The bird feeder made it possible for me to move the feeder back and forth as well as up and down to get it in the best position for photos.

Germs: chingadasos y putasos is my favorite, but peaquarium also pleases. And I love the self-portrait, especially in that frame.

Your beautiful daughter looks fabulous...what a costume! And your father's picture of the A bomb test ... was he exposed to any particulate matter? It looks way too close except of course it was such a huge thing that distances may deceive, I hope. That's an amazing thing to have!

Edited on Wed Apr-22-09 09:41 AM by DFW
Both my girls were lucky to get a healthy dose of my wife's genes:

Here's the "little" one again in civilian clothes with my better half:

My dad never knew whether or not he got contaminated. The Army wasn't exactly in the
habit of telling people that they were risking fatal contamination when they took them
on these PR jaunts back then. He did develop prostate cancer, but that was 35 years
after the test, and he beat it with little discomfort. Eight years after that, he
came down with pancreatic cancer, and at age 78, it killed him. But he was 35 when
he was at the A-test, so who knows? He did have a lot of cancer in his family already.

He was obviously many miles away from the blast. It was so huge, he said, that it just looked
close up. I have the whole sequence he took, if you want to see it. It's about 7 or 8 shots.

Here in the Rheinland, people do their best to be imaginative and outdo each other
during Karnival. Even the staid, formal people behind the bank counters are dressed
up with green and blue hair like that. Must be seen to be believed.

On edit--the rocks: the antimonite is from China, and the pyrite cubes are all from the
Navajún mine in Spain.

The hotel's wifi is out for the night, and only the lounge internet portal is working.

The office here in Brussels is functioning; though, so I'll post the A-bomb sequence tomorrow.

88. Something I know a little about.
In the 80s I worked with a man whose face was peeling off from radiation exposure. He told me that he and his coworkers were invited to watch the tests. They were even told to bring their families. I don’t believe it was malicious, I pretty much think not many people really knew.

92. My dad had been invited, too.
His paper sent him, as he was their Washington correspondent. They were told to duck into a deep
ditch they were standing in when the initial blast occurred, as the flash would blind them. So
everybody pointed their cameras above their heads and shot the first few frames backwards. When
they were told it was safe to turn around, they could shoot looking at the mushroom cloud forming.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki must have given some indication of the effects, and even though the distance
they were observing from was declared to be safe, I still wonder if some people who were experts
on such blasts declined to be present even from this "safe" distance. As we would be testing above
ground for another 5+ years, I don't think the Government had any great interest in publicizing the
fact that they were exposing people to possibly far more risk than they were letting on.
