WABC's All American Survey for Week of 10 March 1964
Edited on Wed Mar-10-04 11:32 AM by CO Liberal
Every once and a while, I post a weekly survey from my favorite non-political web site, www.musicradio77.com. This lists the songs that were popular in the New York area 40 years ago today, when i was in the fifth grade. Enjoy!!! - Wayne

SPECIAL NOTES: The tie at #2 marks the first tie in WABC's post-1960 chart history, not including two-sided hits. (Before the middle of 1960, WABC's chart information was obtained from Cash Box magazine.) There would be only one other tie on WABC's chart, at a lower position, some 17 years later.

Early playlists indicate the Beatles' "Roll Over Beethoven" on the British label, Parlophone, later amended to the Capitol of Canada label.

The songs at positions 29 and 30 were on the printed survey but were not played on the air this week.

All of the album cuts listed on this survey are from the LP, "Meet the Beatles!"

2. That's a huge list
Was Rick Sklar really playing a rotation of 31 songs, plus album cuts and Hot Prospects? Of course WMCA played 57 songs, and I don't recall what WINS had for a playlist. Within 10 years, WABC was playing just 14 songs.

Things would change in just over a year. WINS would go all news in April 1965, and Bob Dayton ("All American of the Week") would be fired in August for playing Sixteen Candles on the 20th anniversary of Hiroshima.

4. I Don't Remember All Those Songs Being Played
Unless Charlie Greer was playing them between midnight and 6, in between the Dennison Clothier's commercials ("Money talks, nobody walks, at Dennison Clothiers, Route 22 near the Flagship in Union, NJ.")

5. This Was Actually BEFORE Harry Harrison
In 1964, Harry was still on WMCA. He didn't move over to WABC until 1966 or 1967, when Herb Oscar Anderson retired.

7. Ingram was there then.
Edited on Wed Mar-10-04 12:15 PM by rsdsharp
He officially began on July 3, 1961 (although he filled in for Chuck Dunaway a couple of nights earlier). Harry Harrison was doing mid-days at WMCA. He started at WABC in September 1968, jumping ship as WMCA was starting to go down the toilet.

11. And He's Still On The Radio
ON WCBS-FM, an oldies station in New York:

http://www.wcbsfm.com/

Harry Harrison, Ron Lundy, and Dan Ingram also worked at that station over the years.

12. Is Dan Ingram Still Working?
He used to be on WCBS-FM on Saturdays and Sundays. And I used to hear his voice on commercials - he used to be the King of the Voice-Overs.

Dan Ingram is the reason I wanted to be a DJ.

Kinda answers my own question.....

Dan Ingram Departs WCBS-FM

Dateline: 06/20/03

The "New York Daily News" is reporting that legendary Top 40 DJ, Dan Ingram is leaving Oldies-formatted WCBS-FM after 12 years. Ingram rose to fame at WABC-AM in the 1960s when that station was the country's premiere Top 40 Radio outlet.

Dan Ingram soon ruled the afternoons with his highly infectious mix of humor and "edgy, irreverent style", as the Daily News put it.

As for his departure from WCBS-FM, it apparently was his choice. The station wanted to take away his Saturday air-shift and relegate him to just Sundays. Ingram chose to walk, instead.

Ingram has long been one of the country's most sought-after voice-over talents so leaving this gig will not impact him financially. Ingram isn't commenting to the press about his split with WCBS-FM but if it were me, I would have done the same thing. Nobody wants to be pushed toward a corner that gets smaller and smaller.
