3. Can we not tease the Phils too much today?
Our beloved broadcaster, Harry Kalas, dropped dead in the media booth, a couple hours before the game. He was 73 years old.

He's been the Phils' broadcaster for almost my entire life. Thirty-eight years.

4. This Week In Baseball had a first: A helicopter tour of Maui!
guided by the "Flyin' Hawaiian*", Shane Victorino, of course. :yourock:

*-Victorino is of Filipino, not native Hawaiian, descent; out here, the term "Hawaiian" properly refers to the latter.

Edited on Mon Apr-13-09 04:17 PM by KamaAina
Kalas began his career here!

http://www.starbulletin.com/news/breaking/42914962.html

(His broadcasting career began in Hawaii where Kalas was sports director of KGU radio and play-by-play announcer for the Hawaii Islanders baseball team from 1961 to 1964. He also did play-by-play for University of Hawaii teams.)

:(

edit: Another famous sportscaster who called the Islanders (long since stolen by moved to Colo. Springs) is Al Michaels. I can't imagine how the noted RW douchebag felt about "the People's Republic of Hawai'i'!

21. Hey, BOSS.
Thanks for checking in. What a blow, eh? Shit.

My XH was the structural engineer in charge of CitiBank Park. He just called - he's wondering if they're going to name one of the breezeways/corridors after Harry, much in the same way they named the food court Ashburn Alley.

incredibly remiss without making a very tasteful, yet very large tribute to the best Announcer in Baseball. And I have every confidence that my team will comply with my wishes.

kid when it came to baseball, he really did what he loved till the absolute end.

Great job, Harry!
We'll miss ya!

The Nats radio guy said if "there was a Mt. Rushmore of sports announcers he'd be on it.."

11. Ooh, I didn't know that.
Is he the local usual guy? I hadn't heard him before, I don't think.

And if you look closely, I'm not teasing the Phillies. It was the first inning, and I had to capitalize on the event. The Phils have, btw, taken a 3-2 lead.

13. He was our Harry Caray, babe.
As a matter of fact, he and Caray were best friends for many years.

This is a sucky day for Phils fans. The Phils were supposed to visit Barack at the White House tomorrow - they canceled because of this.

What a sucky day. :(

Seems a lot of people are having a sucky day. I'm wondering if the team knew about it before hand? I'll bet the Phillies sweep now...I'm sure they will be playing for him...

16. The Phillies LOVED him. We all did.
I can't believe we're never going to hear his voice again. I equate Harry with Phillies baseball.

My brother AND my XH both called. They're both devastated. :(

26. Hey Beach Baby
We can still hear Harry. Check out www.baseballvoices.com. My wife got me the CD "Harry Kalas, Voice of the Phillies." All kinds of great stuff, including his calling Schmidt's home runs, his early days in Houston, 1980 (of course), a nice segment on Richie Ashburn, Cooperstown, the Vet closing and much more. You'd love it.

27. You posted to me about that last year!
I remember you telling me about that! :)

I'm just stunned, I guess. I watched the Phils/Rockies game yesterday, and he was there, doing his thing. He was absolutely fine.

Things like these are truly the wake-up calls that we need every once in awhile, unfortunately - that you never know when someone's time is up.

15. You had to have heard him before. You may just not have known it.
I didn't think I knew who he was today; then I Google Videoed some NFL Films clips and I realized I had been hearing him my whole life. A legendary voice, even though I never heard a lick of a Phillies game.

Sad that it was so sudden. When we lost Jack Buck, we knew it was coming for a long time.
