Bush's Dumbass campaign ad
Has anyone seen the Bush ad where he's touting his leadership and everything he's done for American and its people, blah, blah, blah and then at the very end (keep in mind that Bush himself has been narrating the entire ad) he says, "I'm George Bush and I approve of this message"??

You mean the "message" coming out of your own mouth? Was it really necessary for him to tell us that he approves of the very things that he himself has just said? Jesus Christ, even his campaign ads are stupid.

2. It's required, so that the candidate cannot back away from his own ads
saying that they were aired without his knowledge; if they are paid for with campaign funds, they have to have that disclaimer.

3. It's an FEC thing ....
All the 'offical' Dem primary ads were like that too, so we 'know' where the final 'ok' for the ad came from, unlike the Anti-McCain & Anti-Gore smear ads from 2000 that nobody seemed to have ok'd.

4. Do they actually have to SAY it???
Edited on Tue Mar-09-04 04:20 PM by skypilot
I thought that it could just be written at the bottom of the screen or something or stated in a voice-over at the end of the ad.

On edit: Also, does a candidate have to say it even when he/she is the one appearing and speaking in the ad? That's the thing that seemed strange to me.

6. yeah, they do
Wes Clark said it in his ads in the DC area last month. He said "I'm Wes Clark and I approve this message," about a third of the way through is li'l speech. His whole ad was just a headshot of him, speaking to the camera. It is kinda weird.

11. They have to say it so viewers know it is coming from their campaign
Otherwise instead of being from the official "George Bush for President" organization it could be from say the "President George Bush" oragainzation. This way, supposedly, everyone will know if it is from his campaign or if a negative ad about Kerry comes on that was made by "the Club for Growth" and there is no voice over you will know that it is not officially a part of his campaign.

Interesting side note. Her eis Va. the race for Governor in 2005 is pretty much agreed to be between Lt.Gov Tim Kaine (D) and Att.Gen.Jerry Kilgore(R). I don't know if this voice over rule applies to state campaigns but I do know that the Repubs were planning on NOT using Kilgore's voice in his ads. See, Mr.Kilgore has a VERY sweet and rich southern accent. He sounds like someone doing a parody of a "gay voice"-they didn't think that would go over too well with their base. We'll see.

10. My favorite part of the ad:
Edited on Tue Mar-09-04 04:28 PM by GloriaSmith
When he says something along the lines of how he knows where he wants to lead this country and I'm thinking...if peace and jobs are your visions for this country, then why the hell did you do the COMPLETE FUCKING OPPOSITE FOR THE LAST FOUR YEARS DUMBASS??!!!???

but that's just me.

12. A chill went up my spine when he said that.
I flashed on some of his other memorable statements, like how things would be so much easier under a dictatorship as long as he was the dictator and how he doesn't have to explain why he does the things he does or says the things he says. I felt a mix of fear and pure hatred for him at that point in the ad.
