My nerves are shot over potential (eventual) outsourcing.
My husband told me at lunch today that his company, an US-based international firm, is hiring some Indian programmers for a couple of projects for the company. The company has enough work that they need to hire, but instead of hiring from the pool of US workers, they are hiring in India. Fortunately, no one is getting laid off. Yet.

I figure it is just a matter of time (1-2 years) before they are all canned. We're worried about losing our health insurance because of our son's pre-existing medical condition (autism), amongst other things (like paying for his meds).

My husband is probably the only Democrat in his office. When one of the women started going ballistic over this, he mentioned to her that this Administration approves of outsourcing. I just sent him the India Times article: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/cms.dll/xml/uncomp/articleshow?msid=21849
we viewed here last summer. It probably won't have any impact on her though.

Most of these people are over forty, making good salaries. Changing careers is going to be damned tough.

2. I'm over 40 and recently laid off from a high-salary job
You have my sympathy. Not knowing what is going to happen or when can really drag you down emotionally. Been there, done that.

If the layoff materializes you'll be allowed to keep your husband's health insurance under COBRA for up to 18 months. You pay the premiums, which will be similar to what private health insurance would cost.

Best of luck to you and your family.

3. Thanks. I changed careers at age 35.
I've regretted my choice in nursing, but we'll see.
