Everybody wants to rodeo and ride horsies,
nobody wants to dig holes and fix fence. They also think that because you do the country tradition and drop what you are doing to entertain random visitors (who NEVER call first - "oh we were just out for a drive and thought we'd stop by...) that your life is a big coffee break/party.

2. Sounds like my family
- Hi! we just arrived in Houston! We want to see you!

- Where are you?

- On highway 59, near Sugarland.

- Well, hop back in the car, you got 2 hours hard driving before you get here....

- Hi! we just arrived in Boston! We want to see you!

- Where are you?

- Logan Airport

- Grab a cab, I'll see you in 2 hours...

And so it goes...

4. It reminds me of a story
Edited on Sun Apr-05-09 10:00 PM by XemaSab
One time I was out in the field and there was a ranch gate. I'm sure you know the type: barbed wire looped around a few posts. Me and my colleague struggled with it for a few minutes, then I had an idea.

Get the screwdriver, and loop it under the wire to pull the wire out from the post.

I went to the truck to go get the screwdriver, and sure enough, the screwdriver was in the passenger-side door.

I picked it up, and only then did I see the writing on the side:

WARNING: DO NOT USE AS A CHISEL OR PRYBAR!

I roared, dude. Those screwdriver folks saw me coming from a mile away.

(I used it as a prybar. It totally worked. :hide:)

6. series?
I've never seen a warning on a screwdriver. Ladders - jeebus - so many bright yellow warning stickers you tend to just tune them out - who reads tools and equipment? oh xema does, sorry:rofl:

9. I don't remember Candy
but we used to call a friend who stayed with us for a while "Hop Sing"

room and board would be contingent on getting rid of a teenager or two - they are taking up space and eating all the food

No, I don't remember him much, either...except he was a "stable" presence after Hoss passed on...Why not have me live amongst your teenagers for awhile...I can yell at them and show them the ropes!

in an amiable manner! I do sense possible rip-offs, and am indeed wary...

I've done brake jobs before, too...!

10. As a native Texan
I hate to admit I'm probably a lot better at postholes and fixin' fences than riding horses.

I'd really like to gallop a horse once before I get much older, just seems like a Texan ought to have done that. It's not that I'm particularly afraid of horses, I like them, they seem to like me; it' that I'm afraid of falling off of a horse.

I actually like repairing fence - much more satisfying (and longer lasting) than house work. Well except for digging holes - I don't care for that. I can pound t-posts but I get wobbly and faint when I pick up a shovel.

24. I'm right there with you
I own a horse but fell off the first time I cantered her and have never tried it again. I don't even like to trail ride with her after seeing all the experts that have fallen off on the trail. I really enjoy her though and hopefully we have plenty of time to get that canter in.

sometime by the end of my 46th year, I want to have ridden a galloping horse, dammit. I think I need to date a horsewoman/whisperer :)

Edited on Sun Apr-05-09 10:46 PM by Kali
There is a gust ranch right up the road and they do horsie rides.

I was going to edit that typo (gust) but the way the wind has been blowing...maybe it is appropriate.

18. You're not a born rancher, are you?
You don't drop whatever you're doing - you maybe drop it for ten minutes, and then you take the visitors out to the hole diggin'/fence mendin' area and put them to work, or allow them graciously to bow out because they have pressing business.

19. not technically, no - born and mostly raised a city kid,
but I am the 5th generation in the family, 4th on this same place, and I NEVER saw my Grandfather take a visitor out to work.

I do know others that do that and I know that is what I should do, but the "training" to be hospitable runs deep. Besides then I can bitch when I do it this way:P

23. Simple solution
"Sure you can ride the horsies, but first we gotta fix that fence over yonder to keep the horsie safe tonight." Either they run or you get a day's worth of post hole diggin and fence fixin for a horsie ride.
