What about clipping dogs for the summer?
We used to give our collie mix Lassie a trim. She had long black fur with a thick undercoat. In winter, she would sleep on the porch and the snow would cover her without melting. Pooka is a Pom mix with the same kind of fur. We trim his hindquarters to prevent dingleberries. He loves to sit in laps, but then gets too hot. this winter he loved to hunker down next to a cold outside wall. Should he get a trim when the weather turns hot?

1. I've always heard not to trim up Border Collies because their fur doesn't grow back in right
I'm not planning on trimming our long haired BC. If she gets hot, there's a kiddie pool.

2. I have become iffy about it. Their fur is also their cooling
mechanism. I shaved Hank last year mainly because his hair got so matted up. He is also a very furry dog. I think it helped him throughout the summer, but I had to be careful about his skin getting burned. His skin is white white white. Plus, like I said, their fur also helps them cool down.

3. I looked into that when we adopted a rough collie from the shelter. As I understand it, most long-

haired dogs use their coats as a cooling system and trimming it down can interfere with that. It doesn't get too bad up here during the summer, but we can have a week of 90s. The dogs generally stay in the basement, though, where it's always cool, so we'll see how he handles it (this will be the first summer we have him). Funny, he always flops down on the tile floor at night too while the other dog curls up in his kennel, tail to nose to keep it warm.

I DO trim any butt hair that has poop in it. I'm not going to sit there and try to clean it or comb it out. I just cut it.
