And I agree - from three to four, no big difference other than the food and litter.

2. When the last one you get
ends up being a neurotic pisspot that poops on the floor all the time.

By that definition, "one too many" for our household ended up being "three".

Want a runty black part-Persian pain the ass? ...Anyone?...anyone?

8. Rescue kitty?
Our alpha male has been with us for 12 years and he still freaks out when the food dishes are empty, even for five minutes.

Glad your Mandu stopped pooping. Clover's pooping is escalating to epic proportions. The vet says there's nothing wrong with her innards (except her head, apparently). :( But we're going to try switching them to a non-grain-based dry food to see if that makes any difference with her "issues".

10. His mother was a rescue kitty
my daughter in law (a saint, I might add) teaches agriculture science in an alternative school . Someone found these two scraggly pregnant cats and asked her if she would take them . Not being one to pass up an opportunity to teach the kids a hands on lesson , she took the cats and let the students help take care of them. One didn't make it but Mandu and Liliths mommy did. They names her Butters . She is now a farm cat , living the good life.

Lilith was healthy but poor little Mandu was a pitiful sight. He had to be hand fed and his poor eye was so infected everyone thought he would end up blind. The rest of the litter was easy to give away but no one wanted poor little scraggly Mandu

He is a really sweet and beautiful cat now . They will be a year old in May

24. My sweet friend and fellow admirer of one-eighty:
if you're genuinely worried, don't do it. Perhaps, instead, you could foster a cat who's awaiting a forever home, but don't grieve if you can't be the forever-family to a calico. I was adopted when I was six, so maybe my view of the world is skewed -- those who loved and provided for me "in between" have my undying respect. Being the provider, long-term or short, is a huge responsibility.

23. Sorry. I tried to resist, I really did... Honest! A more serious answer
I used to keep four cats. No worse than three. My furniture and carpet were beyond maintenance, though, so there was a tradeoff. But it won't cost much more in food or time, only a little more in vet bills, and the cats all got along, so there was no threshold there. I live in an apartment now, and can't have more than two (or I would). Although between the ex and myself, we currently have five cats, and I love them all. :)

Make sure you can afford the vet bill, though.

28. How big is your space?
Edited on Fri Apr-03-09 12:57 PM by BurtWorm
We have a one-bedroom apt. for two adult humans, one teen human and two cats. The teen wants to add a third cat to the mix. I think we have reached our limit. The cats usually tolerate each other, occasionally very well. But they frequently wrestle in a way that looks unfriendly. I don't know what a third cat would do to their relationship as it is. And the air is very tolerable now mostly. I think a third cat would push the air quality over the edge.

Are those the kinds of questions you're asking yourself?

Two of them died within months of each other and the other two went with my asshole ex to wyoming.

I have two now and I can barely handle that. But four kitties is a lot of fun. :-)

33. "too"
"One to many cats" is either a range (in which case it's "one - many") or it's a ratio (in which case it's "1/many")

But "one too many cats" is subjective--it really depends on how many you can eat in one sitting.

Our two are pretty much outdoor as well, they go outside so no litterbox even in the winter. As it's getting warmer they don't even want to come indoors to sleep, the only time they now come in is when it's raining.

48. We have twelve indoor kitties
Twelve is the end. We had four cats and then a cat moved under the outside stairwell. She had kittens about four times.

The kittens were easy to catch in the trap. We didn't catch all of the kittens but we got most of them, nine in total. One kitten was caught by the downstairs neighbor and one went to my partners Mother. We kept the other seven.

The Mother cat was not going to get caught in the trap. So I would spend time with her every night, going from just a sniff of my hand to eventually petting her and then having her lay down outside with me. One day I just opened the outside door all the way and layed down on the kitchen floor with a bowl of milk and she walked in and I slowly closed the door.

All but one of the cats are tame. There is one cat (StinkerButt) that is too skittish. We broke a rule with her. When we first would catch them we kept them in a large cage. They were naturally scared and didn't want to be around humans. My partner is very good with kittens and would scruff them without showing any fear (unlike me)and when they could be taken out of the cage and purr in a relaxed manner they would slowly get access to outside the cage. We let StinkerButt out too soon. She doesn't come too close to us but will sleep on the bed with us if we are asleep or if her best buddy Lucius is around to protect her.

There usually are only 3 or 4 cats per room. The only time that changes is when I open wet cat food for them then we get about 8 of them at one time. We take them to the vet three at a time. Three of the females still need to be fixed. I can't wait!

I don't think four cats is too many. Twelve can sometimes get on your last nerve.

Thank Jeebus for unscented cat litter!

50. We tried at first
We had given one away but then they found out one of their kids was alergic so that cat came back to us. My partner and I each love a cat that the other dislikes and we always say, "I will give up my cat, if you give up your cat.", it will never happen. I secretly like his cat too.

You know what is sick? When we go to the pet store we look at the cats that are up for adoption.
