1. Other
When he is not trying to make money can be very funny. When he IS trying to make money though, he is fucking horrible.

3. In that case, I don't think I"ve ever seen him when he wasn't trying to make money
I guess he was okay in High Fidelity, but that's only because it's the first time I saw him playing Jack Black on the big screen; he's played every subsequent role exactly the same.

21. An *essential* one-trick pony.
Fronting Tenacious D, he is a god of both rock and the merciless lampooning of rock. Even the PG version of the D, School Of Rock, nicely captured that spirit in an otherwise lame movie.

4. None of the above.
I love Jack Black; he's talented (Tenacious D) and very funny. Aren't you the one who hates Seth Rogen, too?

6. Don't really have an opinion on Seth Rogen, but...
If someone could point me to Jack Black's funny performance, I'd be happy to check it out.

Kind of can't stand Tenacious D, either. Maybe it's that one song that got airplay and was played into the ground. But then, that's not Jack's fault...

5. He's great in some things, not so great in others.
Great:

Tropic Thunder
Tenacious D

Not so great:

Nacho Libre
School Of Rock
King Kong

7. Keep meaning to see Tropic Thunder because I haven't heard anything bad about it
Maybe this weekend.

Totally agree on the others. He wasn't bad per se, but he was just playing that same "amiable doofus" character again and again. At least in King Kong he was playing sort of an "asshole doofus," so I guess he has some doofus range...

16. Tropic Thunder was great.
And Jack Black really only has a smaller part in the movie compared to the rest of the ensemble cast - and there's a lot of damn good actors in that movie.

8. Awww..I loved School of Rock.
I thought the writing was great (Mike White) and musically really smart----Clash, Blondie, Ramones.

14. It's a decent movie but...
The thing is - it was too formulaic for my tastes. Like you could kind of predict the way the movie was going before it started. It had its moments, and I like the fact that it brought real music into the spotlight but it just lacked a certain punch.

28. I thought it did a good job (mildly) subverting the formula
Like how the kids go along with him, not because they like his "stick-it-to-the-man" Peter Pan shtick, but because he's the teacher, and they're good kids who do what their teacher says. Also how at the end, they do the concert, ultimately because they're overachievers who are proud of all the work they put into it.

It is fairly formulaic of course, but I went into it expecting it to be a lot more so, so was pleasantly surprised.

And yeah, the music choices were obviously done by someone who really likes rock. "Bonzo goes to Bitburg" and Buddy Rich aren't the choices of a writer just going down the checklist of Classic Rock radio hits.

32. Exactly...it was FORMULAIC PRODUCT made by a group of alleged hipsters...
who weren't willing to fuck up their payday a single bit by subverting the formula.
Money grubbing whores.

20. He's good when he isn't playing himself.
Problem is, as with most "comedies" these days, they just write a script about him being Jack Black, and all the jokes are just him being Jack Black. He's funny when he actually plays a character and uses his energy to play the character. He's just not funny when he's just being himself. Like every other "comic actor." Martin Lawrence, Will Ferrel, Chevy Chase... Except Bill Murray, he could actually pull that off.

24. Thing about Bill Murray is that he's only good playing himself in supporting roles
He was great in "Tootsie" because the movie didn't revolve around his smartass self. When he just goofs around on camera as a lead actor, he wears thin pretty quickly (c.f. "Stripes" which was a fun 40 minute movie that ran about an hour past its welcome).

26. Good point. He's usually not on his own, though.
Like Ghostbusters, where he was surrounded by a strong cast, so he wasn't a supporting role, but he was supported.

I don't completely agree about Stripes, but I see your point. The movie does drag when they start trying to act like it has a plot. And I think he was good as the lead in Groundhog Day, although I wasn't quite as smitten with the film as some were. But yeah, I see what you mean, he's best when he's not left to carry the whole movie. I tend to forget about Osmosis Jones and whatever that Christmas Scrooge movie he made was called, where he just goes on his monologue rant at the end. And thanks for making me think of those again. :P

25. That's kind of what made me realize that he's worthless
They've been hyping it for weeks, and I'm sure that he and DJ Lance will put on a good show for the kiddies, but once again it's Jack Black playing Jack Black, complete with that idiot dance he does so often and so well.

Turn the page, Jack; you're slipping into self-caricature.
