I got mugged last night. Ask me anything.
I live in Washington, DC. Last night on my way home from work, I got jumped by 5 teenagers who punched me a few times and stole my dinner. I took off running, which really made me feel like a wuss afterward. I mean, I could have taken any one of them on my own, but at 5 to 1, I figured the better part of valor was to flee. Took the cops 25 minutes to arrive. A joyous experience.

17. I'll second that!
I was mugged at gunpoint last May, haven't swung to the right even a little.

Gotta say, BTW, I was really upset about having a pistol stuck in my sternum, but getting beaten up by 5 guys? That SERIOUSLY sucks. Glad you're relatively OK.

6. sorry to hear that. glad you weren't hurt too badly.
When i saw the subject "I got mugged last night" i instantly wondered if you lived in DC. I live there too, and although I've never been mugged, I know many many people who have. What neighborhood were you in?
Also, about the police taking so long to arrive- go to www.safestreetsdc.com and email them your story.

10. I live on Capitol Hill
I got mugged on 8th street SE just about 100 yards north of Penn. Ave...within sight of the Eastern Market metro. And it was like 7:30 at night...lots of people around. Weird.

Thanks for the link.

11. Five to One
generally means you have to disable three of them to cause them to abandon task.

While I would expect one or two of my old students to try it, most should not. This is not a movie, after all. However, for future reference, consider running before you are surrounded. It could have been a far less benign experience.

15. I thought about how nice it would have been to have a weapon, but...
...there's always a good chance that they'll take the weapon away from you and use it against you. I'd rather get my ass beat than stabbed.

16. Awful and terrible. I can relate...
...A few years ago, when I lived in L.A., I parked my car in the lot next to my building. Two men came swiftly from out of the shadows and ran up to me. One put a gun to my head. He said, "Your wallet and your keys, motherfucker." I pulled out my wallet and my keys and dropped them on the ground. I walked stiffly to the entrance of my building, fully expecting to be shot . Murdered. For no reason. I wasn't. I buzzed the super (as I had no house keys), and she let me in. I went up to my apartment and called 911. Within 15 miutes, there were four cops in my apartment, and a cop helicopter overhead, searching for my car. But the car was where I'd parked it---as I soon learned. They hadn't stolen it. Shit, it was an '81 Honda Accord and their own ride was probably sweeter. A week later, I got a call from a Guatemalan family on Fairfax Avenue. Someone in the family had found my wallet on the side of the road, discarded out the window as the thieves sped down Fairfax to the 10 Freeway. I visited them, and was pleased to have back my personal mementos that were in my wallet. I couldn't thank this family enough for doing the decent thing when, in the cold, hard reality of life in L.A., they might have done nothing at all. Six months after this, a good friend of mine was shot in the head, in my neighborhood, for not offering up his wallet fast enough to his muggers. Luckily, he survived. It was then that I moved to a "better" part of town.
