I was so inspired by a post by another DUer (Ava) and it brought back such memories, I hope it's okay to springboard off her post and just ask:

Did you study art at a university? Writing? Painting? Cinema?

Are you happy that you did?

I had the best time of my life, but I always hesitate to recommend that others do this, because admittedly it can be very painful and disappointing.

But I love and admire anyone who pursues a life in the arts. I don't think people realize how much you give up to try, and how few people succeed.

Anyway, I regard anyone who tries to become an artist as a hero. Don't expect anyone to appreciate how much it hurts, or how hard the path is, or how little anyone cares, or how little you get as a result of your efforts.

But welcome to the club of Those who Understand.

1. Thanks
As an older *cough cough* woman who is pursuing a degree in Fine Arts, I appreciate this post. I have no idea where it will lead or if anywhere at all, but I love it (most days).

:D

2. I mostly had a great time.
Studied it at Trinity University in San Antonio and the University of Houston (large state school).
2D design, 3D design, painting, and a few others.

Took art history at U of H from the famous Dr. Peter Wolfgang Guenther. He was a real character.

I wish I'd gotten a BFA in painting at U of H.

However, now that I'm retired I can be an artist and don't have to rely on my degrees in boring stuff to try to impress people.

My teachers were old hippies.

Anybody who wants to see my artwork, please go to my blog:

3. I went to college going after one art and wound up majoring in a different one.
I originally went to school intending to get a major in theatre before moving to Hollywood to become an actor/writer/director. That was, of course, before I learned that living in the "real" world isn't always easy.

In the end (after transferring twice) I got my degree in English Literature from the University of Colorado. Over my last two semesters studying English Lit, I read a total of 63 books, including some great authors (J.R.R. Tolkien, James Joyce, Jack Kerouac, Mark Twain, and many, many others). it was fascinating to read so many different novels and experience so many different world views.

I like to think that all that reading has helped influence my own writing, though I have no clue if it's made me any better as a writer. I keep reading away, whatever interests me, trying to understand different views of the world and to find different ways to express my own view of the world.

Maybe, just maybe, I'll become somebody with my writings someday...

4. I loved Art History - on edit whoops
Edited on Wed Apr-01-09 11:06 PM by hibbing
Hi,
I loved Art History in college. I was fortunate enough to have parents that always took me to museums when traveling. I took two semesters of art history and found it wonderful. I love being able to go to a museum and identify who painted the work before looking to see if I am actually correct!

Guess this is a bit off the OP, sorry about that.

Peace
