Oscar-Nominated Actor Paul Winfield Dies (Sounder, Julia, MLK, Huck Finn)
LOS ANGELES -- Paul Winfield, an Academy Award-nominated actor who was known for his versatility in stage, film and television roles, including a highly praised 1978 depiction of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., has died. He was 62.

Winfield died Sunday of a heart attack, said his agent Michael Livingston.

In 1968, Winfield played the boyfriend of Diahann Carroll in her situation comedy "Julia" -- a role that some suggest helped open television to other black performers.

Four years later Winfield's portrayal of the father in "Sounder" earned him an Academy Award nomination for best actor.

1. Oh, my. What a shame. A good actor. And this is weird.
I'm not really sure I buy into that "show business people die in threes" old wives tale. But...first Spalding Gray, then Paul Winfield the next day...

Makes me wonder.

Terry

13. Gosh, he was a great actor - his portrayal of Roy Campanella...
...in the 1974 TV movie "It's Good To Be Alive" was incredible.

Well, there's two celebrities this week - they say these things come in 3's... :(

14. That's so sad, "Sounder" was a great movie I saw as a kid.
Sounder was such a good kids' movie.
I also loved the "Wiseguy" arch with he and Tim Curry as the rival record company guys. They had a bet that whichever one survived the other would dance on the deceased's grave. When Paul Winfield's character died, Tim Curry's showed up in a tux and top hat to dance. When he started dancing, firecrackers or caps went off, as PW's character arranged before he died. It was funny and sad and sweet all at once.
