Yoga for Indian rail staff, air-conditioning for drivers
Mon Aug 11, 4:14 AM ET

PATNA, India (AFP) - Indian Railways is to give its train drivers air-conditioned cabins and other staff yoga lessons in a bid to cut down on acidents and improve efficiency, officials said.

Drivers now sit on small round uncomfortable wooden seats in temperatures sometimes as high as 56 degrees C (132 degrees F) -- conditions which the rail authorities believed would keep them alert and prevent them falling asleep.

However, with a string of train accidents in recent months, Rail Minister Nitish Kumar took a decision to improve conditions for drivers, according to Railway Board member M.Z. Ansari.

"Railway networks all over the world provide comfortable working conditions to drivers because it keeps them fit and sharp over long periods of time," Ansari told reporters on Monday.

Apart from air-conditioning, drivers and their assistants will in future have cushioned seats, as well as walkie-talkies to allow them to keep in touch with station officials.

To improve the efficiency of other rail staff, yoga training will be given every morning, said another official, A.K. Singh, senior commercial manager of the Danapur rail division.

To begin with, all ticket checkers will undergo yoga every morning, he said. Booking clerks, station masters and cabin staff will be included later.

3. Honestly,
not a bad idea, given that it's probably much cheaper than upgrading the shitty equipment. Hope they keep good records to document the efficacy (or lack thereof) of the program. Reminds me of the Japanese workday calisthenics thing.

But an equipment upgrade should definitely be a future aim.
