My nephew, who consumes mass quantities of meat with joy, wants to . . .
. . . go vegetarian.

I don't get it!

Ever known someone like this? I mean, my sister makes a roast, a 3-4 pound roast, and the thing is more than half gone the next morning. The kid loves his meat.

???

1. My neph did the same thing in high school.
Suddenly became a Buddhist and vegetarian.

4. My neph's in college now (engineer and whip-smart)
He was always a 4.0+ GPA kid, and definitely does things his own way. He came to his awareness his junior or senior HS year.

8. why does that frighten me?
Probably because I think his life is complicated enough.

That's what I think. I have to remind myself that he's his own man.

Oh, god . . . a man . . . he just turned eighteen. Yipes.

6. He said he doesn't know.
Maybe he's like me. Too tender-hearted towards animals to think of their being killed for his food.

14. Ah. The teenager's "Universal Response",
appropriate for all occasions.

"What? You joined the Hungarian Army!? You gotta be kidding me... Really!? Why on earth did you do that!?

"I dunno."

Maybe you are rubbing off on him. But, like Marrah_G, I wouldn't be at all surprised either if there's also a girl involved in some way. :-)

10. My son did it
when he was 15 after watching a documentary about the cruel treatment of animals for consumption. He is 24 now and still a vegetarian. He is now married and his wife became a vegetarian after they married as well.

11. I have a niece that did that
She was pretty dismayed when she found out that being vegetarian meant no pepperoni on her pizza!

To her credit, when she got older and went off to college, she did become a real, bona fide vegetarian and has stuck with it for many years.

12. Taking a break from meat is so refreshing; esp. if there are lots of fruits and veg.
I eat a few ounces of meat a few days a week, but if I start eating it daily, the effort to digest it becomes a drag for me.

13. I ate enormous quantities of meat and I became a veggie
I wouldn't call myself vegan since I eat refined sugar, but I try to stay away from any other animal products.

I was the kind of person who would eat 4 by 4s and double six dollar burgers

15. The timing here may work to his advantage.
At 18 he's probably about done with the "always ravenous teenage boy" stage, and may be ready for major dietary changes.
