You know what type of PC game I miss?
Combat flight simulators. The realistic ones. They seemed to be so popular in the mid-90s but have fallen after the millenium.

It's a shame really, I'd really like to see a WWII one take full advantage of today's capabilities. As well as a new Star Wars version. They dropped the ball with not having a BSG one, too.

1. Speaking of BSG ...

I had a game for the Intellivision back in the day ... hellifiknow when this was now but it was the year it came out ... that, while not called Battlestar Galactica, was clearly based on it. The enemies looked like Cylon raiders, and the sound effects were, as closely as could be done given the platform, from the show.

And I agree ... doing a combat flight sim based on the modern BSG would be awesome.

Ubisoft has some of the best, more recent WWII combat flight sims, but Microsoft has a lock on the genre through patents and copyrights and aren't doing much with it.

3. Space Spartans.
Was the game. One of the voice modulator games for Intellivision. Came out in 1981.

2. I miss space exploration games.
Starflight, Star Control 2. (Note my avatar is from Star Control 2)

Last time anything came out that even approached the vast glory of these games was Microsoft's Freelancer.

Too much focus on graphics and not enough on game worlds these days.

4. You might want to check out an upcoming game called "rise of flight"
It may be coming out who knows when, but it looks cool at this point.

6. I spent about 10 years waiting for Sierra/Dynamix to upgrade Aces of the Pacific
and Aces Over Europe before finally giving up. Those were fabulous in the '90s with their historic model, but the graphics were decidedly 1992.

Dynamix did upgrade Red Baron into Red Baron 3D, and you can download patches to get much better graphics. I still fly that, but I miss the Aces series. I wanna do split-S's in a P-51. :D

I've also got Microsoft CFS WWII Europe Series, but it's got a helluva learning curve.

Have you tried them?

10. Nope
Think I remember seeing that one at EB with about a b'skillion others, but Aces were the only WWII sims I flew. I also had F-117 Nighthawk and F-16 Fighting Falcon back then.

11. Well then you should really get a copy of IL-2: 1946
It has all the other expansion packs included in it, and you can probably grab one for twenty bucks. It's got all kinds of cool planes from the entire conflict, lots of interesting campaigns (even from the Finnish and Romanian perspectives) as well as jet aircraft from the immediate post-war era, like the P-80.

13. Cool, thanks
I need to get a game port that'll let me use my rudder pedals.

I flew the P-80 in the extension AOtP: 1946. It had a stall speed of something like 160 knots and wouldn't turn worth a damn. OTOH, flying the F7F Tigercat and the F8F Bearcat was great, as was flying against Japanese aircraft like the J7W Shinden.

29. OMG
That was probably the first computer game that I played that wasn't named "Oregon Trail." I was off the wall then, too. One mission had me fly over Japan. I decided to fly to Korea afterward, instead of returning to my carrier...

I'm playing the second Microsoft game at the moment, and it's fun.

Not that into modern ones, though.

15. My first game mod
Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe (Lucas Arts)

I hacked a "P-47" into the "P-47-O-Death" - something more like an A-10 Warthog. Not very sporting, but fun.

17. Yeah, the last X-Wing game they made was quite a while back.
And it had a lot of annoying 'features' that made it worse, IMO, than the earlier ones despite the upgraded graphics.

26. There are a lot of those free online made with Flash...
you've just got to go looking for them. www.newgrounds.com is a good place to start...there are some of those mixed in with the point-and-shoot and the cartoons/anime/video content. Warning: the content of that site is mostly unmoderated and user-content created and should be taken with the POV of being potentially NC-17 or worse. Just so you know going in that it's a caveat emptor sort of thing.

22. I miss the original X-Wing and Tie Fighter
X-Wing was beyond fucking difficult. I think I only passed the first campaign on the original release, and by that point, I had practically all of the non-campaign-specific awards locked up.

Wing Commander wasn't a real simulator, but I loved that one, too. I felt like a god when I finally blew K'tithrak Mang to hell.

However I still have yet to find a decent joystick that's USB and reasonably priced.

24. Maybe you all can help me out...
My dad used to have this game on a DOS system where you would just type words. You were the main character and you would instruct the character to "go right", "throw arrows" etc... and the computer would tell you what you were encountering but no graphics just words. Any ideas?

If you know the title of the one you're looking for, they're mostly-all available online.

You can play Zork online for free here: http://thcnet.net/zork/

25. the last decent combat flight sim i remember is Lock On: Modern Air Combat
it came out in 03 or 04 and I wanted it so badly, but there was no way my computer was going to run it at any playable speed...But that game got a bunch of great reviews for it's realism and online gameplay and i read the people who made it plan to release a new game in the near future...

back in the day, I used to have Jetfighter 2 and X-Wing
