yeah, so i decided to color my hair
i pretty much just wanted to darken it up a bit and make it a bit richer/deeper.

i don't know if the box was mislabeled or what, but my hair is now lighter than it was before i colored it. it's a light auburn color. x(
i have to go back over it with a dark brown now to try to get it to the color i wanted.

now i'm remembering why i quite coloring my hair awhile back. :banghead:

My co-worker died her hair (her friend talked her into it) and it was supposed to be a dark auburn color, I think, it turned to red wine purple.

14. Did you say "auburn"?
Maybe that's why you hate it so much. The roots (ha!) of hate run deep.

16. Such is the grief of kit hair color
The problem is that your kit most likely contained a 20% peroxide solution. 20% peroxide is usually strong enough to strip all the pigment out of the hair. The dye is supposed to replace the stripped pigment but not always. Lift and deposit.

If all you want to do is deepen your color, it's best to avoid kits where the box reads: "Permanent".

What you need is a deposit-only color or what is known as "Semi-Permanent". Those kits contain a 10% peroxide, which is just strong enough to open the cuticle so that it accepts the color.

Sadly, Loreal used to make a very nice Semi-Permanent kit called Excellence but they changed it to Permanent formulation about 10 years ago.

My advice is to buy a bottle of Clairol Natural Instincts which is fairly decent. It's a temporary color and will fade away but, when it does, you can apply it again without damaging your hair.

18. i just did a layer of dark brown
it pretty much just turned my hair back to the color it originally was but a bit darker.. which is what i wanted. my hair was a medium reddish brown before.. now it's just a tad darker.

20. The Loving Care Clairol Natural Instincts is what I use on my grey. I have used the level two semi-
permanent, but that strips hair color so I went back to the truly temporary stuff. I am not grey enough to need more than that yet. Gives me really cool gold "high lights." :)

(For Ava: If you go darker look for golden colors. The red tones tend to be pretty harsh looking and you might wind up with maroon hair. And make sure you avoid the semi permanent stuff or you will just strip your hair again.)

21. I always mix my reds with brown
Red shades are unreliable and they slide off so quickly. You're right about going for golden shades as they are usually yellow/orange based - as opposed to the violet/red base that so made red shades contain.

A true semi-permanent should contain 10% peroxide and therefore isn't strong enough to strip the natural pigment, only strong enough to open the cuticle. The problem is once you open the cuticle with peroxide, it remains open until the hair is cut off. This is why colors fade.

As you said, the version of "Natural Instincts" you mentioned will only coat the hair, leaving the cuticle moderately intact. I suppose I have a prejudice against that product because it's just "Loving Care" in a newer package and "Loving Care" (used to?) contain metals that built up over time.

What I really miss is the fact that Redkin no longer sells their tinted "Shades" shampoo. That stuff was sweet. Delicate color enhancement and the hair felt wonderful.

17. NOOOO!!! DON'T DO IT!
Your hair is pretty just the way it is Ava. :-(

I hate it when people who I think have perfectly nice hair think they have to color it.

19. well thanks, but too late
though now that i have it fixed it is barely different... just a tad darker than it was before. it isn't a different color though, just a slightly deeper/darker shade.
