What music are you listening to this weekend?
The other "listening to" thread is a bit out-dated now, so I'll start a new one.

A big mix so far:

Garth Brooks - In Pieces (I always thought he's a Democrat. :-) )
Nerina Pallot - Fires
Hey Monday - Hold on Tight
Mirah - (A)spera

All recommended - the first three highly. I prefer a bit more melody and pop feel than the Mirah, but I still enjoyed it, unlike with some other freak-folk influenced artists.

Vampire Weekend- It's their self-titled debut

Various stuff on Sirius and youtube.

I think I responded to the other thread that is now outdated and, yes, it's my bedtime. :)

7. It's the best CD I've bought so far this year
Edited on Sun Mar-22-09 12:41 PM by Droopy
Hell, it's the best CD that I've bought probably in the last two years. All of the songs are very catchy. They say that they are influenced by African pop. You won't find distorted guitars on the album and they use all kinds of different percusion instruments. It's truly a unique sound, this side of the Atlantic anyway. And I think it's the kind of music that people from different generations would get into. Just watch out for a couple of f-bombs if you play it around the little ones.

12. I'm a bit behind on my Dream Theater...
I sort of stopped listening after "Live At Budokan". Not because I didn't like it...I just...drifted away for some reason.

As for Vampire Weekend, if I wanted to listen to my Elvis Costello and Afro-Pop albums simultaneously... :)

14. I just picked up that Dream Theater the other day
The only other Dream Theater album I've listened to is "Images and Words." I just heard a track off of it on the Sirius metal channel called "The Dark Eternal Night" and it rocked pretty good so I picked up the album. I haven't really gotten into the groove of the whole thing yet, but I'm enjoying it. If you like long complex songs and variations in the mood of the music then you would probably like this disc. Some people would call them "pretentious" but I like that showy stuff.

I couldn't believe it....I didn't have that track and hadn't heard it before. Apparently my son didn't burn the entire CD....I had to listen to it a few times, and then went begging for it.
Ironically, I just posted Season of the Witch the other day... Super Session.

I also heard:

Two Twenty Two - Grass Routes (highly recommended - they remind me of Wussy)

samples from upcoming Mandy Moore CD, Amanda Leigh (at her website - I thought her self-titled CD was a good pop album, Wild Hope was even better, and Amanda Leigh sounds like it might top Wild Hope! Anxious for it to be sure - comes out May 26. Mandy has come a long way from her bad teen-pop days!)

Listening to lots of (Ozzy-led) Sabbath lately, Opeth, Devin Townsend, Satch and a fair amount of Blues.

One of the limited number of metal acts I like - and one of only a few new ones (Mastodon, System Of A Down, Disturbed.) Good riffs and well-placed screaming instead of constant.

18. Silbermond - German Rock Band
My latest discovery.

The video is very edgy; The lead singer is singing in the middle of a street riot, a mob is wailing on the cops with sticks, tear gas flying one way, molotovs flying the other way.

Not the type of video that's likely to pass muster with US sensors.

I really hope it's the third single. I also really like "Already Gone" and the two bonus songs on the deluxe edition. The only song I remember not liking was "Whyyawannabringmedown." Overall, a very good CD.

Edited on Sun Mar-22-09 04:23 PM by mvd
"Whyyawannabringmedown" could be the hardest song done by an Idol contestant. I like it, but it's not one of the best songs. I wish I would have gotten the bonus edition CD.

Have you heard any other good CDs lately? It's nice to find another male (from your profile you are male) here having some similar taste. :hi:

30. I haven't bought many CDs
The only CDs I've purchased in the last 12 months are: Britney: Circus, Pink: Funhouse, Leona Lewis: Spirit, Delta Goodrem: Delta, and Kelly's.

I love Britney's CD (I love her in general). I think I liked Blackout a little more but this was still a great CD. The stand out songs are Womanizer, Out Of Under, and Unusal You.

I was a little disappointed with Funhouse. I LOVED Pink's last CD so maybe my expectations were a little high. This CD just didn't have the same spark her last one did, although it's still good. My favorite songs are Sober, Please Don't Leave Me, and Glitter In The Air.

Leona's CD was good but a little monotonous. None of the other songs were nearly as fanastic as "Bleeding Love" but still good. I particularity liked "I Will Be" and "Take A Bow." She needs to inject a little personality and fun into her songs.

Delta Goodrem's CD was good but nothing special. It's just that most of songs were "fillers" not single worthy. But there's one fantastic song called "I Can't Break it to my heart." It's the most played song on my iPod after only six months (I played it over hundred times). I just love the song, especially if I'm in sad/mellow mood. I'm happy I downloaded the CD and have enjoyed it. I would still recommend it even though it's not a great CD.

I tend to download more song than CDs. Since you like pop, there's a girl group in England called the Sugababes you may enjoy. I would recommend their songs "Red Dress", "Hole In The Head", "About You Now." I've never heard an entire CD from them but I love these songs. You should like "About You Now" since is was produced/written by Dr. Luke who also did "Since You Been Gone" and other Kelly songs. You could probably just listen to these on youtube....I do that a lot.

I would like to purchased CDs more often. There are several others I would like to hear, like Lady Gaga's and Katy Perry CDs.

31. I also have Pink's CD
I loved it, but it's hard for me not to like a Pink CD. Still think Kelly's CD is a little stronger. I'll have to check out Leona, and I have an older Sugababes CD and like it. I bet the new stuff is also good.

I don't care for Lada Gaga, but I bought Katy's CD - it's good, but there are too many filler/by the numbers pop/rock songs. I like pop, but like it most when I feel there was real craft put into it. :hi:

26. New stuff from M. Ward and Bishop Allen
"Never Had Nobody Like You" is going to be one of my favorite songs of the year. It's pretty much perfect. The rest of the album is solid, but I haven't heard anything on it that quite lives up to that song.

Bishop Allen split the difference between their previous two albums - it's a little less "produced" than their last album, a bit more polished than their first. I think the best track is "The Ancient Commonsense of Things", but that could change as I dig in more, and I will soon.
