Back from the ER after a trip in a squad
My oxygen saturation was the lowest it's ever been. I got oxygen, breathing treatments and prednisone. Lelapin (LadyoftheRabbits) followed the squad to Columbus and never left my side.

I'm tired. It's such a struggle to breathe. :(

I'm not in the clear. They wanted to admit me (first time ever for asthma) and I refused. All I could see was a total getting bigger and bigger and I couldn't pay it. We've got to have universal health care.

Time for another breathing treatment...

16. Asthma as the result of an upper respiratory virus
I've been going through this since I was 2 or 3 years old. I'm usually pretty good at managing it, but the condition got away from me last night. The peak flow numbers were humbling and frightening. Not sure what I could hit this morning.

Unless you've had asthma like us, it's difficult to explain how bad it can be. I compare it to being held under water. I feel I'm drowning. :(

17. oh, Lizziegrace, I had no idea. My father had asthma
that is how we lost him. Please take care.

One of the things that would help him on tough days was drinking 2 cups of black coffee. I can't remember the whole thing about it, but something about the caffeine helps to open airways. Not a replacement for an inhaler or meds, but it helps if you can't get to your meds or inhaler right away.

With lungs full of crud, the steam in helps too.

I was thinking as I was riding in the squad last night that I don't want to die this way. As I get older, it's getting worse. :(

23. I'm glad you know when to call an ambulance
it's important you get the medical help you need right away.

My father, refused to call an ambulance even though they are literally one block away from the house. He was attempting to drive himself, but my mom wouldn't let him. She drove. He passed out on the way, and basically died in the car on my mom. They worked on him for 20 minutes, ended up on life support. Even if he did come back to us, being without oxygen for so long, he would have been in a vegetative state. He wouldn't have wanted to live like that, and we finally made the decision after three days to pull the life support. It was in the middle of winter, the cold was always so hard on him.

His birthday is today. He would have been 64. It's funny, thinking about this today. I can hear him singing "When I'm Sixty-Four", lol. He was a good man.

Take care Lizzie.

LIke I said in one of my other posts. It's better to go into debt than to (god forbid) die from asthma.

You go back to the hospital and stay if your numbers go down again. Do you have a nebulizer??

It's packed in the box marked "Medical Christmas." It has that wreath with the antique ornaments in it, and those cool fragile blown glass ornaments that were on the mantle in the top of the box. The medical stuff is on the bottom.

Hope you are feeling better today. So glad LOTR is there with you!

48. Oh dear ...what a way to cap off a move!
Please rest and have some chicken soup (the neutrophils really do have a beneficial effect) and let the medications do their thing. If things at any time deteriorate head right back to ER. But you know that.

I have asthma myself and I have learned how quickly one can deteriorate from not being comfortable breathing to not being able to breathe or speak (no peak flow measurement possible)at all (20 minutes) ...luckily I am about a block from several ERs. I have had both the intravenous steroids (probably what they wanted to do for you) and the oral course (descending dose: 7 pills the first day and one less each succeeding day) both of which brought me around. After a number of similar inexplicable emergencies I finally added the steroid inhaler Advair which I use every day along with the steroid nasal spray. Advair takes a little longer to kick in but it has fewer long term complications than prednisone.I haven't been to the ER since. But an oral course of prednisone will do the trick...it also has the effect of making you feel rather ebullient which I imagine you could use about now.

55. I use the Advair
and the nasal spray and have had good success with that.

Only one time did I have to do the prednisone and I don't react well to at all. It makes me so hyper and anxious. I ended up going back to the doctor after repeated panic attacks. All he could muster, "Oh, didn't I mention that."

To the OP: I can't imagine what that feels like. I've never had an attack the bad. How scary. Hope you feel better soon.

I hope what you've got on hand is enough to get you through, but don't let yourself get in the weeds without calling for help again.

Thank goodness you've got so many good people nearby who run when you call. You may think you're the queen of bad things, but look at the friends and family who care so much.

Hang in there.
