4. I'm still not sure why ANYONE wants to live in Texas!
And that's because I've been there. Nobody even knows how to dance unless you do it in a group going around an oval and it is a pansy ass skip step to begin with! WTF?

20. That is mainly a function of being white
I am white, I know better. At 27 I have taken exactly 0 dance steps in my entire life. Also the number of times I have tried heart surgery. I am equally qualified to do both.

11. Ding ding ding ding! You are correct!
I don't know. Little town, you probably get an inflated sense of self-importance if you lived there.

19. 67 in the entire county
Edited on Fri Mar-20-09 04:54 PM by KamaAina
down from 91 last time I checked.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loving_County,_Texas

Also note this intriguing piece of Mentoniana:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mentone,_Texas#Alleged_takeover_attempt_by_the_.22Free_Town_Project.22

In February 2006, Mentone became the focus of a New York Times article detailing an alleged attempt by libertarians Lawrence Pendarvis, Bobby Emory and Don Duncan to "take over" the town and Loving County. According to the article, Pendarvis and his associates, part of the Free Town Project, planned to buy parcels of land in the county, then move in enough of their supporters to outvote earlier residents and take control of local government.

According to a website for Mr. Pendarvis' movement, their objectives were to "remove oppressive Regulations...and stop enforcement of Laws prohibiting Victimless Acts among Consenting Adults, such as Dueling, Gambling, Incest, Price-Gouging, Cannibalism, and Drug Handling." Additionally, the group sought "to ensure that the Sheriff's Office or the Town Police are never allowed to waste valuable Town resources...to oppress our residents by the investigation or enforcement of violations of Laws that punish Truancy, Drug Trafficking, Prostitution, Obscenity, Organ Trafficking, BumFights, and other Victimless 'Crimes'."

Although Pendarvis, Emory and Duncan claimed to have legally bought 126 acres (0.51 km2) in Loving county in 2005, and registered to vote accordingly, the county sheriff, Billy Burt Hopper, determined that this land had been sold to a different buyer. Misdemeanor charges were filed against the three men, who had left the state by this time. Pendarvis claimed to have a cancelled check to prove his purchase of the land in question, but no deed was ever produced, and the original landowners denied having sold land to Pendarvis or his associates. The three were subsequently featured on a "wanted" poster issued by Sheriff Hopper and the local Texas Rangers (displayed at Hopper's office), and threatened with arrest should they return to Loving County.

Although Mr. Pendarvis' website remains operative, his project does not seem to be active at this time, due to lack of funding and participation.

"Are you pondering what I'm pondering?"

"I think so, Brain, but how are we going to buy that much Jell-O?"

"No, you idiot! We'll get 68 DUers to buy land there, and get me elected sheriff, 68-67! After that, we'll take over the world!"

edit: As I understand it, only revenue from oil leases allows Loving County to continue operating. Otherwise, it, like its school district, would have been merged with a neighboring county decades ago.

21. You might be surprised
I don't know about Mentone specifically because I've never been there other than to fly over it, but there's a pretty diverse population in west Texas. There are even some areas I can only describe as hippy communes (old hippys communes anyway).

Many of the counties around Mentone went blue in the last election.

24. Just remember Texas only went red by 8%
Texas is slowly going back blue. Dallas county is now blue as is Travis (Austin), Bexar (San Antonio), Harris (Houston), El Paso, and all of the southern most counties.

So all of the areas that have any culture besides kicking shit are blue.

23. 67-12 McCain't/Failin'
which is odd, because the census counts only 67 residents total.

Perhaps some people live a little closer to civilization and vote in Loving County absentee. Or maybe it actually gained 12 people since the 2000 census.
