Can files from a DVD be copied on to a 4 GB SD Chip?
And, if so, will the movies play on the usual media playing software?

1. I don't know, but since no one else is answering (and assuming this isn't just a cc)
I don't see why not, as long as it's not encoded. Many video cameras can record on memory cards. My phone does. I can play a clip on my computer from my phone's microSD card.

If this is a joke, I apologize for getting sucked in. :)

2. No, it's not a joke. I figured there were many geeks and college students here
...and they would know.

3. I know for certain that it can be converted to an MP4, then stored on a SD card.
and then played on any player that plays MP4s.

I do it with movies for my iPhone and iPod all the time.

One obstacle is copy-protected DVDs, but there are ways around that.

4. Yes they can...
but I haven't tried it.

I assume they can because I rip DVDs all the time and can play them off of my hard drive. I can also write the movies on my hard drive to DVD. So, why shouldn't I be able to play them off of a card or thumb drive?

And, just to confuse the issue slightly more, I usually copy from DVD to DVD, but the software leaves temp files on the hard drive that can be used to play the movie or burn more DVDs.

The final confusion is that most movies, even old B&W ones for some obscure reason, are now dual layered, so you need the 8GB media and a drive to burn them or at least an 8GB memory card or thumb drive.

8. When I used to rip movies
I used shrink to 5. Great little program. Don't know if it's still around anymore. There's plenty of freeware dvd ripping software out there.

10. I use 123CopyDVD 2008 which I got..
at Staples for about 20 bucks or so. There might be a newer version out, since I had to DL a free upgrade to get all the features to work. So far, the only copy protected DVD it's hiccupped on has been Rattatouille, but an even newer version might deal with that.

There are plenty of freebie rippers and burners to download, but after fooling around with a few, it was well worth 20 bucks to me to not have to deal with several different programs (one to rip, one to shrink, another to burn...)

The 8GB movies are partly because of all the extras and partly because so many are high definition-- they look OK on my TV, but spectacular on my monitor which is set to 1600x1200. If and when I get a large-screen HD TV, they'll look great. You can adjust the movie's resolution when ripping and dump the extras, so there's a way to get the movie down to 4GB. If all else fails, the freebie DVD Shrink should work to squeeze the flick down to size.

Then it should.

9. As long as it's under 4Gb in size
I use flash media to transfer files from one computer to another all the time.

12. If the files are under 4GB, of course. Any file can be copied to a SD chip,
as long as there's room.
