The beagle's in the hospital. Vibes, please?
She woke me up early this morning, needing to go out. As we were heading to the door, she started to heave, and threw up a little. She did this twice, before getting to the door, so I went outside with her to make sure she was okay. She stopped on the top step of the porch and pooped--and it was bloody and icky. She did this again at the foot of the steps. I collected the bloody stool in a bag and called the vet. I took her and the stool samples. The vet looked her over, palpated and listened to her abdomen, checked her glands, which needed emptying. He said he couldn't find anything besides the glands, and they weren't all that bad. He took the samples, and said they do concern him, so he wanted her to stay at least overnight, to keep an eye on her. I'm supposed to call in the morning. I reminded him that she has an egg allergy, so eats a vegan food, and that a meat-based food might make things worse. He agreed, and said he'd feed her the Purina prescription food that's vegan (I can't recall the name--one of those letter combinations). But he said he may not feed her much of anything today, to let her system rest.

She just doesn't get sick. Ever. She's eaten things that would kill most critters, and shown no reaction at all.

This worries me. I'm gonna call before the clinic closes tonight, to check on her.

8. oh no! Vibes to the beagle!
You two were just having such a nice walk yesterday, I'm sorry she got so sick all of a sudden. Hopefully she's just eaten something that disagreed with her....

Let us know how she's doing, OK?

13. Update--I talked to the vet earlier this evening. He says it isn't parvo.
Yikes!! Apparently, that's what the vet was afraid it was, but didn't want to mention it until he knew one way or the other. She's up to date on all her shots. The boarding kennel where she stays when I go on retreat or wherever insists on up to date shots on everything, including parvo and bordatella.

The vet thinks she ate something, maybe something sharp like a twig or a piece of bone. He says other things are good--she's not anemic, has no fever, no sign of tumors anywhere. And she hasn't had a BM since being there, so the diarrhea seems to have passed (no pun intended). He wants her to stay until he can get another stool sample. So, she'll probably come home tomorrow.

I hope.

Thanks for the vibes! :hi:

15. You'd have known if it was parvo.
Thank God that it wasn't, regardless.

The vet took blood, right?

Glad the Beag has a good prognosis and should be home tomorrow. I never sleep well when one of my kids is off campus at the vet overnight. I hope that's not how it is with you.

16. How would ya know if it was parvo?
It never occurred to me that it might be because a)I don't really know anything about parvo, and because b) she's vaccinated (which is also a reason I don't know about it--I just figured she'd never get it).

And yeah, I won't sleep well without the beag snoring in "the night crate".

18. The smell.
Parvo excretion is something that would have sent you reeling. You'd have known immediately that something was very, very, very wrong as opposed to seeing stool that came from an ill dog needing attention.

17. Thanks! And OT--is "Wapsie" a reference to the
Wapsipinicon (sp?), which used to regularly flood my Campfire camp?

25. Yes it is.
Growing up around there we rarely if ever referred to the river(s)by the full name.

28. I grew up in Davenport, and we rarely did either.
But I remember it flooding all the time. In fact, when I drove over to Wright County last summer, the Wapsie was over its banks.

29. Yeah the Big Wapsie and Little Wapsie both flood in the spring.
The Big Wapsie is especially prone to flooding even in a normal year.

22. I'm glad you got a good report. I was a basket case when my dog had the ear surgery.
There was a horrible storm that night, and I was worried sick all night. I forgot, the surgery would make him deaf! He didn't hear a thing!

But I still wish he'd been home with me. He was awfully miserable for about a week. They had to keep him on IV morphine for several days. I went to see him every day and snuggle, but it just made me sick. His ears were sewed to the top of his head. And very bloody. I thought I had made a mistake by allowing that surgery.

He's better off now, although deaf. It has required some adjustments, but he's worth it. He steals my pillows now. I can buy new ones, but he'll steal those too. Oh well. We can share.
