Another regional colloquial question....
Do people in places outside of Maine/New England say "mmBye" when they get off the phone?? Where does that come from anyway?

1. Good question. I have another.
I've heard people say, and seen this kind of thing written in DU:

Examples:

"Those chairs need cleaned."

"Some people need fired"

It's either the dropping of "to be" or use of the wrong verb form, ie; "cleaned" instead of "cleaning".

I've always wondered if it's a regional affectation.

2. My mom grew up in PA Dutch country. She used to say funny things like
"If you drink that all gone before supper, you'll be sorry!"

16. That's very much a western PA thing. It probably happens elsewhere too, but
it's very common here.

4. Every single person I know up here, including me, says 'mmmBye'
It's really odd. It's all *anyone* ever says when they get off the phone.

AND IT'S ONLY WHEN YOU GET OFF THE PHONE!!!

No one does it in person.

I find that really odd.

17. mmmmmmmyellow!
That's how my mom answered the phone. Don't remember how she said good-bye.
She was raised in Illinois just outside of Chicago.

Me?
Hey! for hello.
and...Bye-yee!

20. Well, no one here has claimed it for other places so I guess maybe it really is a Maine thing.
Of course, this was hardly a scientific study of the matter. :P
